We've just taken delivery of one of the very first retail
Nokia N97s ever to be sold anywhere, and we wanted you to revel in the experience with us. We haven't formed any impressions yet, but we're being told that the retail device includes some last-minute improvements to keyboard feel -- and we can confirm that it feels pretty usable (the tiny right-aligned space bar could still be an issue for some, though). Stay tuned over the coming days for plenty of coverage on this sucker, but for now, enjoy a quick unboxing, won't you?
Waiting for video review stuff :)
His video review: So this is the N97, yadda yadda, S60 needs a total revamp, yadda yadda yadda, it's not an iPhone.
@Douglas: You new around here?
@ Chris: I've been following this website for a couple years now.
@Douglas: Just so we're clear, I don't take kindly to being called an Apple apologist, especially considering the devices I use on a personal basis. These kinds of under-informed remarks will get you banned in the long run.
@ Chris: I never said you were an "Apple apologist" and I don't think that banning someone for expressing an opinion is very professional. I just feel that based on your review of the 5800, which, software wise, isn't all that different from the N97 aside from the home screen and kinetic scrolling in the web browser, that I anticipate hearing a lot of the same comments, and I thought that a few of them were simply over the top ridiculous for the 5800.
you tell him Chris. I'm tried of these people complaining.
Youtube is full of nice and some less nice videos displaying the new N97. Most of them are pretty blurry though.
Here's one I found that's not that blurry http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSEkm8ZTyKE
The screen seems to be high quality and the GUI up to the current standards.
Thanks for the clip, hadn't seen it before.
But Chris's video review will make my day if he can get one coming :)
Definitely looking forward to some impressions on this phone. I'm debating about buying either an iPhone or the N97, but I can't find anything in English about this phone.
Can anyone link me to a good video review? So far I've seen one in Russian, Italian, and maybe Spanish. But I still don't have a clue as to whether the phone is any good.
I think the App store is what's pushing me toward the iPhone.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pm0VVEI0P04 pretty good review.
Debate no longer: http://thenokiablog.com/2009/06/08/poll-nokia-n97-or-iphone-3gs/#comment-10652054
Can I say the new N97 is better than the new iphone 3Gs. . . I thinks so.
Better in what way?
Well Five mega pixel Camera, 32G of Storage plus expandable, plus a qwerty keyboard. Plus less on a At&t plan and removable battery. Do I need to say more.
Not really, just looking for some elaboration :)
But really, the plan is cheaper? How much is an iPhone plan?
No :D Awesome phone indeed.
I have understood that guys in the US have to take minimun 70$ plan with the iPhone? I assume that many takes over 100$ plan with iphone. In a long term(24months), that's lot of money!
@ el cartel just because a pixel count on a camera is high doesn't mean it takes good pix. My iPhone 3G takes better pix than my friends 5 mp tmobile phone. Both are going to have up to 32GB of memory but 299 vs. 600 is a big diff. If the N97 had 8 mp cam, better browser, bigger screen maybe I hate Symbian though
@Jason, in most cases you would be right about the megapixel count but the N97 has Carl Zeiss optics. I had an N95 with the same camera and it by far took the best pictures compared to other cell phone cameras.
Nokia has a history of making some of the best cameras in phones... I seriously doubt the 3 MP in the iPhone 3G S will beat the 5 MP in the N97 (MP count or not)!
My experience with the N97 so far is that it's equal or better than the N95, which is no photography slouch, and improves with every firmware release. Check out my Flickr, especially the newer shots towards the end: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tnkgrl/sets/72157600048630570/
If you're going to compare prices, compare unlocked to unlocked. I'm sick and tired of hearing people talk about how much cheaper you can get an iPhone for, when all they look at is the price on a contract. Oh and I like how you say pixel count doesn't matter and then say if it had an 8MP camera, maybe you'd get it. Go to an apple forum if you want to brag about how good you think your phone is. That's a shame you hate symbian, but I know where you're coming from because I hate the iPhone's OS.
Chris, I'd really like to hear your thoughts on the CPU speed and responsiveness of the UI versus the iPhone and Pre. Also, let's hear about the sensitivity of the resistive touchscreen versus the iPhone and Pre's capacitive touchscreens.
The funky keyboard layout is something I could probably live with, but I'm not interested in a phone that feels slow or unresponsive. Assuage my fears, pal.
Justin!!! What's up?!
Stay tuned, dude... we'll be rocking this review just as soon as we can!
@Chris Ziegler
Any chance you to get us little first look or sneak peak video review before full review? :)
Maybe it's just me but I like these first look reviews before reviewer doesn't even have a clue how all the things works.
Random question but does anyone know what the email is like on the N97, is it HTML or still plain text? I have the N95 8GB the now and hate the plain text email.
I have my N95 8GB setup with my GMail account with the Messaging service and although e-mails come as plain texts like a text message, they come with an attachment also. I click on the attachment and it opens the web browser which opens the e-mail like it should be. Works very well. E-mails are in regular format.
Oh look, Nokia didn't put a video cable in the box. Idiots. Do they automatically assume that we're never going to use it or do they think we already have one from a previous Nseries we've owned?
Sounds like a pretty good assumption, honestly.
It uses a standard 3.5 video plug. I have 5 or 6 laying around from various devices. They aren't proprietary, and very easy to come by.
What's the thingy he's holding in his hand, looks like some type of pointer.....
stylus.
I believe that you guys at engadget mobile, hd, and regular engadget that covers a variety of items are the definitive reviewers for consumer electronics. The only thing I would like to know, is the N97 unlocked worth it and useable as my primary phone?
On amazon this phone costs 603.99 with free shipping. I specifically would like to know about the symbian os, the ovi store, and multitasking. Is the symbian os linux like or android like and how is the multitasking on this phone? Is symbian os solid as a future operating system for developers on mobile smartphones? Will some app developers create more applications for the ovi store or will everyone just flock to the android os and webos? By the way is pandora radio being built for the ovi store, I do not see it on the store's website? Also it does work on at&t iphone 3g data plans and it will also work worldwide. At&t plans for the iphone just got cheaper for an individual, do the at&t plans that are cheaper for the iphone work well with this device in America? If I leave at&t which would probably be a few years from now can I use this phone on sprint or verizon's network or would it only work on At&t and t-mobile? By the way at&t needs to do something about dropped calls on the iphone.
This is just a suggestion, but since the pre, the new iphone, the G1, and the nokia n97 that is coming have all been mentioned on engadget.com why don't you guys do a comparison of the phones and their os's. You guys could also make predictions on which platform the app developers will flock to. Which os would be the one that will survive this economy and come out as a winner. I for one think that multitasking on the iphone is shit and sometimes my pandora app fails. Also this is not related to engadget.com but it is related to podcasting. Why don't you guys go on npr's wait, wait, don't tell me as guests on the not my job game. Anyone from engadget be it mobile, hd, asia, espanol I think would be hilarious.
Because 85 percent of Engadget readers are incapable of taking any comparison to their OS of choice without assuming that the editors are biased towards every other OS. It would cause a huge flame war, basically. The Windows Mobile crowd would get butt-hurt that the iPhone OS wasn't criticized enough, the Symbian crowd (which i'm a part of) would bitch about complaints regarding the appearance of their OS, iPhone peeps would deflect all the hate with more flame-bait, and Palm and Android ilk would quietly watch from the aisles since their OS is too early to criticize much. I would welcome such an article, but would dread reading all the juvenile comments.
Let's face it the era of windows mobile os and windows operating system is coming to an end. I want a smartphone that has an os on it that will still be there in the future.
their phone numbers are getting BUSY tone.
I got one today as well: http://tnkgrl.wordpress.com/2009/06/09/the-nokia-n97-is-here/
Yes, please compare this to the iPhone and other high end cell phones because I'm on the fence with the N97. Personally, I'm undecided between this and the 3GS because I want a GSM phone.
