iPhone 3G S line begins in NY, weather be damned
It's pretty gross in NY right now -- sure, you've seen rain before, but you've never really experienced it until you've seen the grit and determination of these city folk wandering around in a light downpour with their $500 umbrellas. That's why it comes as zero surprise to see that despite the ongoing drizzle, a few brave souls have gathered in front of Apple's flagship store to be among the first in the States to get an iPhone 3G S tomorrow morning. Sure, they could've pre-ordered for delivery and stayed dry, but what's the fun in that? So far it's four friends from The iLife blog keeping each other company, with plans to upgrade one of the crew's original iPhones (for that attractive full subsidy price). These guys also braved the mayhem of the iPhone 3G launch, and who knows if they'll wise up before the next one. By 7AM tomorrow they'll have spent 24 hours in the elements -- quite a lot of commitment for a phone, but hey, that video recording bit is pretty neat, and male bonding is forever. Meet these guys and their cloud-sent adversary on video after the break, and check out the read link for their ongoing liveblog of the launch -- naturally courtesy of some iPhone 3.0 tethering.

Wow!!! Gotta give it to those faithful Apple customers.
WOW, we need to re-evaluate our priorities in life. If you have that much time on your hands, you can be more productive.
I agree. Its only a phone.
These people who lineup a day before need a LIFE. Give it to someone who doesn't have one... Wait, they are in line for an iPhone 3G S ...
Agree, if you have nothing better to do then wait in line for a phone. something is wrong
Maybe one day I will understand the need to be among the first to own something.
I guarantee neither one of these guys have EVER been layed. Look at the guy in the middle, every heard of low cut sock?
ummm pre-order anyone... or maybe apple's website blocked pre-orders for mac users.
This is a mean, anti-fanboy comment, but i have to say it.
Maybe they arent that technologically orientated. They want iPhones after all....
They did pre-order them... Engadget got their facts wrong. They say so in the video.
LAME!! Pre-Order the thing and do something somewhat more meaningful with your lives.
I pre-ordered and it has been delivered and is waiting for me at the store.
you know how you can tell how much of an apple fanboy someone is? Just look at their umbrellas.
losers. get a life.
wow that is really sad....and unsurprising
silly white people
Wow by the looks of those guys they are those type of people that will buy anything that has an apple logo on it. Engadget why don't you take pics of lines in Phoenix, AZ thats if there any considering today it will be at 101 degrees not as hot as it usually gets (around 110-116 in the summer) here but still thats extremely hot for like 90% of the nation.
Their parents must be proud.
I thought that dude in the middle was a chick.........haha
@Reftheking
Me too! Haha
People, seriously have you all taken the fun out of your life. I am pretty confident they already know they could pre-order the phone. I am sure they could have just woken up in the morning stood in line, maybe an hour to pick up the iPhone 3GS. But they are going out and having some fun and meeting new people because of what they are doing. What’s wrong with camping outside, celebrating for a single day to express your excitement for something that one really likes and proud to own. I think these guys are “EXPERIENCING LIFE” for a day. For all those that just want to complain, how about pulling the corn cob out of your rump and trying something new, instead of making fun of others.
Claps. So true my friend, so true. I once stood in line for a day for a store opening in Tokyo. It was quite an experience and I met some nice people.
i've attended and years ago, worked a few system launches. If you're a fan of the launch product, they can be fun. It's great (and sometimes scary) to be among people who are as excited about a product as you are. VERY geeky, yes, but fun. If these people have the time and money to do this, more power to 'em.
Still, i can't stop thinking those umbrellas have been used to hide some discrete linejerk action. i really wish i could stop thinking about that.

hehehe. :)
WHY are all my internet ad's in Spanish?!
People this is a Phone. Remember!
I just feel that it is insulting that anyone should stand on a line for a day or more(black Friday also) just to give someone there money.
Are the people going to do this every June?
what a bunch of losers
can you say L-O-S-E-R-S.....
I do not what's more funny, comments online calling people losers, or people that post those comments.
Oh thank god that I'm not the only one commenting just to flame these guys. I also was going to comment "If these are the guys in the iPhone waiting line thank god I'm not an apple fanatic."
You know I don't know why I didn't think people waiting in line for the Pre were crazy, but for some reason I look at this and think "stupid apple people..." My wife got a Pre on launch day. But we woke up at 10:30am and called a local Sprint store run by a licenced retailer and we still got one. But we weren't going to go wait in line for one...
I never really understood the love of macs. If you want to be totally different and difficult just use a linux distro. Why would you support such a dictator of a company? Just look at the new iPod shuffle and its proprietary head phones if you want proof... stupid fanatics.
Engadget, you're always awful with this. How about giving us a link to these guys website? You have the nerve to video record them and put them up here... giving nothing back. You do this so incredibly often that I hate reading articles from you. All of your links in the article are just links to keyword searches on your site. Lame. Really, really lame.
Then you state in your article that "they could've pre-ordered"... as though they didn't, but they say flat out in the video... they did pre-order it... but they want to be the first ones to get it in the morning at the store.
They're having fun and I think it's great.
They need to rename their web site TheIhavenolife.com
