What a difference
18 months makes, eh? The relative short line for today's
iPhone 3G S launch at Apple's flagship Regent Street store in London could be attributed to any number of factors: the economy, the steep cost of upgrade for iPhone 3G owners, or the fact that Apple allowed for advanced iPhone 3G S orders with home delivery. Or maybe people just aren't willing to wait in line for a bump in speed, improved graphics, and video recording. We wouldn't call it apathy but the iPhone halo doesn't seem as shiny beneath a spotlight now shared with Android and the new Pre. Regardless, the iPhone 3G S is now on sale in the UK and a few more European countries with North America up next after a few degrees of the Earth's rotation.
Update: According to O2, sales for the 3G S have already surpassed numbers for the iPhone 3G during last year's launch. Looks like pre-orders were in full effect here.

FIRST!!!! and damn...the economy is bad :p
It's cause it's the same phone!!!!!! Just renamed! They need to actually throw in a radio and HD screen learn from the Zune HD!!!!!! HD radio would be sweet in a phone!
Agreed. From the perspective of someone who regards the iPhone/iTouch as a multipurpose handheld computing device, not as a phone, the half VGA screen has always been the deal killer for me. I look with some envy at the slickness of the iPhone, but each time I step back from getting it for that reason.
I've been using a multitasking PDA with full VGA 4" screen for nearly 5 years (the iPaq 4700). How can I possibly downgrade to a iPhone?
Totally agree!
It's taken Apple 7 years to catch up to other who's been offering the basic features like MMS, Cut & Paste, etc since 2002! I won't even mention the other 3G basics the likes of video calling, etc....
... and now, every man and their dog are starting to offer 5MP cameras, OLED screens, etc.... looks like Apple is going to be further behind if they only "update" their iPhone once every 12 months.
IF any one really needs App Store, I'd say you'd be better off getting an iPod Touch instead. Definitely cheaper and with no strings attached.
Kudos to Apple for proving the famous Marketing quote "Selling a comb to a bald person"
ReVan, I like your comment, I laugh so hard when I read your comment "Selling a comb to a bald person". It totally made my day!
I so want an iPhone 3Gs, but I simply can't afford one, I was jealous of people that are getting one, but your comment made me feel so much better. thanks! =)
Pre-orders and the fact that so many couldn't upgrade at reduced price.
The fact that most people who want an iPhone already have one and know that the 3Gs is nothing special, at all. They've lived their lives happily without a compass to this day and so no point in having one.
I don't think Android or Pre has anything to do with it.
1. iPhone 3Gs is not a new phone
2. They have way better phones over there in general
What are these "way better phones" you mention?
So when & where can we buy a 3GS out right with no att 2 year contract BS?
You already can, you could've pre-ordered it at the non-sub price.
OK but would'nt u still be stuck with att? This gift might just have to wait for the unlock
Here in Italy they sell for 619EUR for the 16GB Version, no contract, no netlock or anything... At the Apple Store in Rome ;)
I would have bought a 3G S, but not at the prices O2 are charging new customers!
Unless you're a diehard Apple fan, the new 3GS doesn't have a great number of improvements over the 3G to warrant spending that much money. I mean, a 3mp camera? Even some of the cheaper phones out that are equaling that. I'll wait to get this until much later.
How is Apple's pitch in their new commercials a technology that every phone has, "Now with video." Really, can they be anymore late?
I just received my 3G S in the mail. No waiting in line for me!
Everyone agrees that the iPhone didn't introduce anything new to the smartphone market, if anything they came in late and still were short in features (MMS, Copy & Paste, Video calling etc). But Apple knows how to take something and make it look so simple and attractive to consumers. That's where Apple shines and they do a damn good job at it.
That being said, I am not an Apple fan. I had the iPhone for a while and had to let it go for the fact that I felt I was holding a toy in my hand. A very expensive beautful attractive toy that is :)
