PSA: tethering your iPhone on Rogers doesn't cost extra
Hey, AT&T, Rogers stole your extended subsidy idea, so why not return the favor and copy some of this when you roll out iPhone tethering later this year? Canada's GSM giant is charging precisely nil for the pleasure of connecting your iPhone to a computer and using it as a modem, instead merely deducting bytes from your data bucket just as though you were consuming them on the iPhone itself -- as long as you have at least 1GB of data in your plan, otherwise tethering's not available. That works especially well in concert with those who have Rogers' sweet 6GB-for-$30 data add-on, but otherwise, many users (especially those with meager 1GB accounts) will have to be careful not to overrun their monthly limits. At any rate, the takeaway here is that if AT&T comes out with a $50-plus tethering add-on with a 5GB bucket at this point, there'll be riots, bloodied bodies, overturned cars, the whole nine yards.
[Thanks, Rod]
Update: Michael Bettiol points out that Rogers is ominously saying this pricing structure is good through December 31st, so it's anyone's guess what happens after that. Odds are Rogers is giving itself an out in case data usage is totally off the chain.

What happens after December 31, 2009?
Too bad Rogers doesn't have an unlimited plan.
nobody does.
Telus has an unlimited data plan with 10 nationwide faves for $50. I love this plan! I just wish Telus had better phones though...
read the small print. it is not unlimited.
The answer to their question is wrong. It asks, "will it be free?" and the answer says "no." Hmm.
Yeah, the question is really poorly worded.
It's Rogers, it's no surprise. They want their consumers to be as confused as possible, hoping that the consumer signs up for something he didn't fully understand and gets charged like crazy about it.
why can we have rogers here in the us? :\ great hardware and great plans unlike att
I agree, I wish Rogers would just buy and ATT in a HOstel Take over scenario.
Boy do they Deserve it! Jerks.
That would be awesome due to the fact rogers mobile was once called Rogers AT&T numbers of years ago
Shame on all of you for wishing you had Rogers. Rogers is by far the worst operator to deal with. Be glad that you don't have 3 year contracts as a standard. Rogers doesn't even have the best plans really. Operators in North America need to take note on European operators and how they handle their plans and services.
And like the other guy said, Rogers Wireless used to be called "Rogers AT&T"
Seriously, Rogers sucks. That 6GB/$30 plan is a limited offer until the end of July, and only for iPhone and Android customers who sign up for a 3 year contract. After that, the plans range from 500MB/$25 all the way up to 5GB/$80. They're charging for incoming text messages as of the beginning of July unless you have a plan that includes them (and not all do, for those it's an additional fee to add it). They generally find ways to gouge the shit out of you for everything. They're seriously a horrible, horrible company and the only reason most of us stick with them is because they're the only option in Canada for GSM service. Bell and Telus are switching at the end of the year or early next year, though, and GlobalLive Wireless should be entering the market soon, so we'll see what happens then. If Rogers wants to keep me past December 31, they're going to have to bring their data rates down a long ways and give the good prices to everyone.
lol like ATT would ever LEarn.
this is old news. i have that plan from last year.
edit, i have the 30.00 plan on fido...same difference. was first question i asked them when i signed up. At&t has a lot of small print and throws words like unlimited around too much same goes for most other carriers. what they do not say in most cases is unlimited surfing and data are 2 different beasts. as of last august there was only one unlimited data plan in existence. vodaphone ireland messed up its initial launch of its data plan and tons of subscribers ended up with an unlimited data plan.
several carriers have done the same but have pages of small print restricting it use. telus and bell are the worst.
oh and it is not a iphone plan. the 30.00 plan is for all phones.
should be reinforced.. this plan is available to any subscriber to the $30/6gb plan, not just iphone users. Beware the brand name hype.
I've been trying to add it to my plan for a while now but it's not listed anywhere on their website. I can only find the 5GB/$80 plan, so if you can point me to the part on their website that says it's open to everyone, I'd be very interested.
It's going to be $30 for you data plan + $30 more if you want to tether. If they made it cheaper, especially only $30 for data that includes tethering, then why would anyone sign up for their $60 laptop data plans?
In other news Rogers is going to start charging 15 cents per incoming message after July 7th. Make sure you get a Value Pack (12$ minimum) before that...
FU Rogers.
No one does. AT&T charges an insane amount if you use more than 5GB/month. Same with Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile. Heck, Rogers actually gives you 1GB more than the carriers in the states do for a monthly allowance of bandwidth.
If anything, calling the data plan that US carriers give "unlimited" is definitely false advertising when you consider you have to read the fine print to fully understand all of the terms. Regardless of whether the text is there or not, qualifying terms in subtext has already been proven a big "no-no" in other types of contracts by the courts and Congress (like the recent bill on credit card contracts). Sooner or later, this practice will stop if/when a big case hits the news.
30.00 plan with rogers/fido is all inclusive not on top of other data plans. if you hate rogers so much go to fido. they do not charge those fees.
Wow. I never thought a Canadian carrier would be praised over an American one.
Note that it's pretty much all Yanks doing the praising. They really have no idea how shitty Robbers is.
