iPhone 3GS: $179 to build says iSuppli

iSuppli's just released its estimated cost of Apple's newest offering, the iPhone 3GS. Total costs for the 16GB model costs $178.96 to manufacture, according to them -- give or take $4.63 more than the 8GB iPhone 3G estimate from last year. It's also about $40 more than iSuppli's most recent manufacturing estimate for the Palm Pre. The estimate covers only materials, and doesn't take into account various costs such as shipping and distribution, packaging, royalty fees or all the miscellaneous accessories included with each handset. Regardless, it definitely looks like Apple's managed to step up the innards of the phone without a significant bump in costs.

i dont believe this. It has to be much much less in order for the companies to hit there profit margins. Regardless of how many iphone they sell. CORP america
Remember that AT&T's price for the phone is the subsidized price. Either Apple charges AT&T a much larger price for the phone and AT&T keeps all the profits from monthly subscriptions, or Apple and AT&T share the subscription profits. From what I recall, AT&T is no longer sharing subscription revenue with Apple, so it's probably the former.
Depends on the economy of scale, but i would bet that the iphone 3gs costs much less than that....
A netbook consumer price is 289 euros for a samsung nc10, which includes bigger screen, costlier x86 processor, heavier weight therefore more expensive transport costs...
Samsung only sold a few millions, apple sold 50 millions of iphone v1, 3g, 3gs lowering the cost of the 3,5" lcd screen further.
179$ ? in malaysian dollars then ?
more than cheap....
