Remember that AT&T's price for the phone is the subsidized price. Either Apple charges AT&T a much larger price for the phone and AT&T keeps all the profits from monthly subscriptions, or Apple and AT&T share the subscription profits. From what I recall, AT&T is no longer sharing subscription revenue with Apple, so it's probably the former.
Depends on the economy of scale, but i would bet that the iphone 3gs costs much less than that....
