Best Buy-sponsored survey shows that Americans want smartphones even though they don't understand them
Do you understand your smartphone... really understand it? Know its moods, its wants, its desires? A survey hosted by Best Buy Mobile shows that half of people don't, with 47 percent saying the things confuse the heck out of them, while 60 percent of those aged 35 - 49 feel that people with smartphones spend too much time working and not enough time playing Wii Sports Bowling. Those feelings of confusion and ire doesn't stop a "sizable segment" of the rest of the 1,000 people surveyed from wanting a handset with brains, with most desiring access to the sort of apps you can't get on dumbphones, and 14 percent of women saying that playing games was "very important" -- only nine percent of men said the same. Sadly, there was no figure indicating how many people enjoy paying too much for text messages and signing their lives away on lengthy contracts.

Nobody has to "pay too much for text messages and sign their lives away on lengthy contracts". JUST BUY AN UNLOCKED SMARTPHONE!! Of course, the concept of separating the purchase of a mobile device from a subscription to mobile services, and the freedom associated with such a concept, is totally alien to Americans... The American mobile industry is such a joke...
It's the monthly costs that gouge, not the one-time cost of the phone, genius. Unless you're a fool who juggles several unlocked handsets at a time and use them without data services during that brief time, it matters very little over the course of owning the phone whether it is unlocked or not. The number that matters (general consumers) aren't phone junkies in that sense.
Besides, that has nothing to do with why people buy a smartphone. What an uneducated tool.

Mark said the same thing, you can choose your carrier with an unlocked phone, therefore choosing a cheaper data plan. Learn to read and understand before unleashing your rage and undeservedly bashing someone. I pity your entourage.
Who's the adhd fool who doesn't have any patience to try and understand ?
Who's the ADHD fool, indeed, tool?
Mark's only solution is to buy unlocked phones. The issue this article brings is a fully different topic than what your BFF is ranting about. Besides that, his rant provides no solution, as switching sims doesn't address the issue of monthly fees outside of saving a buck or 2, here or there.
Fuck yourself back to the rock from whence you slithered, moron. (And you might want to stop by a convenience store to pick up a pack of gray matter on your way)
This article times a f*cking thousand. I can't stand people who "need" smartphones and do nothing but only call with them
I had a G1 for 5 months before going back to Windows Mobile. I still like to question all of the kids, I am a kid myself (22), on why they have the G1. When I go into details, and really get down and dirty with inquiries, I lose them at SD card/sotrable apps. Sadly, this is true. I hate iPhone but I know alot about it. I can pick one up and immediately begin toying with it. I am not saying I knw everything but I know more than my coworker who just bought his 3G S.
For every 10 smartphones only-maybe-2 of them are really being used. That's a damn shame.
