Nokia claimed to be working on Android phone for unveiling later this year (updated)
Talk of a possible Android / Nokia tie-up has been ongoing since time immemorial, and the latest fuel to the fire comes from the Guardian which is sourcing "industry insiders" as saying that the world's largest phone manufacturer will reveal an Android-powered touchscreen handset at its Nokia World event this September. Though Nokia itself has never truly ruled out the possibility of working with Open Handset Alliance code, a move into Android right now would truly be an odd one -- granted, the Symbian Foundation is probably on thin ice any way you look at it, but even without S60 and its successors in the mix in the long term, Nokia still has Maemo quietly reaching platform maturity in the background with rumors of an imminent MID / superphone hybrid swirling in recent months. It seems that adopting Android (even if only for a select number of models) would be an admission on Nokia's part that it has failed to be a Maker of Standards, despite its overwhelming size and market position -- not to mention a major bet that it can continue to win customers based on the strength of its hardware alone, since it'd now be working with a common platform adopted by dozens of companies large and small. So, here's the million- (or maybe billion-) dollar question: all things being equal, can Nokia outdo HTC and Samsung on the same platform?
Update: And now the Nokia spokesman response: "Absolutely no truth to this whatsoever, everyone knows that Symbian is our preferred platform for advanced mobile devices." Yes, unfortunately / fortunately, we do know that.

Hardware wise the nokia N97 is SOOOOOO close to being the perfect device.
What it needed was a capacitive touch screen, decent software, And a Beefier processor.
on the software front I would love to see them licence WEBOS from palm, or even do something with Android along the lines of What HTC have done, (multi touch and Flash support on a Qwerty Device Yes please!!)
As much as I don't agree with the loss of direction that Nokia has shown as of late; I seriously doubt it will dwell into the Linux code any deeper than with Maemo. Any speculation from insiders or outsiders is pure speculation and wishful thinking; only brought on by the "new" factor that Android and WebOS have brought to the table... Besides, you don't invest millions in purchasing off all Symbian assets; just to abandon it to other manufacturers. It is more likely that other companies will look further into what Nokia can offer them, and Nokia's recent aquisitions and expansion is testament of that. For example does: Navteq, Trolltech, OZ messaging, ring a bell to anyone? In my opinion, Nokia is just making sure that it's software and hardware development and offerings expand beyond it's own market footprint. A wise business decision in the long run; one that will payoff big time once handset manufacturing becomes a commodity on all levels(basic, smartphones, MID's)...
WOOOH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
More power to you NOkia!
Take that platform and revamp it on the N97. plus a capacitive screen!
and bammmmmm your money...............
Nokia can't beat the other companies with the Android phone, they are use the Symbian, so they are good with that OS, they are specifized, not with Android. They want to copy Samsung and HTC, but this won't work, this is my opinion.
the rumor was denied by nokia

I find it annoying that the same story is on regular Engadget with a totally different set of comments.
What about NOKLAs?
fuck android.
Well, it looks like Symbian is dead! Needless to say, so does Windows Mobile!
wtf are you talking about?
Aw man, for a second there I thought Nokia was actually trying to stay relevant!
