We're here at T-Mobile's myTouch 3G launch event -- quite a bit subdued compared to the G1 launch, but still a T-Mobile extravaganza all the same. In the meantime, you might be happy to learn that the phone is
now available for pre-order, with a guaranteed August 5th delivery date if they order before the 28th. Notes from the launch talk with Denny Marie Post and Cole Brodman:
- myTouch is about "self expression." Like when you did drawings with crayons for your mom: sure, it sucked, but it was the self expression that mattered. Apparently.
- Cole is talking up the Google love and the Android ecosystem. A "strong Google partnership."
- Cole says we'll have "more Android devices out this year."
- Denny sees it as a more desirable device and potentially more attractive to new adopters of smartphones. "Boundless possibilities" for individualization. They're showing a few videos, which seem to be app-centric as far as individualization goes. "If it could sweat for me, it would."
- A few apps being highlighted: Wikitude, Sherpa, a few exercise apps, imeem, YouTube uploads, Qik (my buddy's iPhone can't do that), Twitter, a ringtone editor. A few Google services mixed in, naturally.
- They're both showing off their own devices and how they've personalized them. Denny is a big fan of Zombie Run, which she plays with her 15-year-old son at the mall. Best mom ever?
- T-Mobile, in partnership with Google, will help put a "lens" on the Marketplace to help users find the good apps. Going to offer an "app pack" to highlight a particularly useful selection of apps. One of the highlighted application partners will be Sherpa. Also working on improved payment options: will include a direct bill option to post app purchases directly to your T-Mobile bill.
- Shipping the phone with a zippered case and a cloth screen-polishing sleeve (like we've seen already).
- Matching service plan warranty with device warranty, and working on retail experience / consumer training, including in-store appointments.
- No current plans to bring HTC Hero to the US.
And that's it! We're heading down now for a hands-on -- stay tuned!
Is itd just me, but do all these Android phones all look odd in one way or another G1, Hero, and Mytouch. I was really looking forward to Android but all the phones are ugly and Sprint, Verizon, or ATT don't have any.
It's just you.
Nothing said about the i7500? bummer
*WHY* would tmo talk about another phone at an HTC event? They DID mention other android phones, so have patience.
I agree completely. Is a standard headphone jack really too much to ask for in a "high end" smartphone?
Re: the "odd" looks- next to the G1 and the myTouch, the Samsung is by far the best looking. I do have to say though, that the build quality and durability of the HTC-made devices I've owned has been outstanding.
Although I didn't care too much for the looks of the original G1, I have to say that after seeing and feeling one of these in person at a local T-Mobile store I fell in love.
Even as a self proclaimed Apple fanboy, I must admit that all the iPhones floating around is starting to feel a little old in the tooth. Everyone has one but I can say that I'm glad to use something different.
The device looks elegant and compact yet the keyboard is large enough to type on. The screen resolution looks sharp and the call quality (at least in my tests) were excellent and loud.
The HTML browser rendered pages quickly and fast and the trackball was defiintely a welcome addition for those small links that are difficult to click by finger.
T-Mobile has decent 3G coverage where I live (I know not everyone is so lucky) and coupled with WiFi it's a winner. The lack of a 3.5 mm headset jack is a bummer I know, but there is an adpater if you absolutely will die without one. The standard one works fine for me.
I just preordered a white one of my own last night around 11-ish. To be honest, if I never had the opportunity to play with one myself I wouldn't have pre-ordered it. The online pics and videos floating around don't do it any justice. It's like a person who is good looking but doesn't photograph well. ;-)
Since it is small and thin, it fits well in your pocket. That's why I just ordered myself a couple of Invisibleshields by ZAGG to protect this bad boy.
To each his own. I know there are a lot of AT&T and Verizon employees who love to talk trash about T-Mobile and try to drown out the positives with their past negative experiences, but I challenge them all to get one of these in their hands and use it for a few days before passing judgement on the hardware and/or network. There are areas like mine where the network is fantastic and call quality is excellent. No reason to pay more for covearge I will never ever need.
