Sony Ericsson hand delivers 8.1MP C905a and W518a Walkman to AT&T
While one could argue that Sony Ericsson should really be focusing its efforts on getting a Rachael / Android-based handset out on the double, it's evidently content with digging up a year-old phone, slapping an "a" on the end of it and passing it along to AT&T. The 8.1 megapixel C905 that we were so jazzed about in June of 2008 has indeed been certified for AT&T as the C905a Cyber-shot (left and center), offering the same 8.1 megapixel sensor, face detection, AutoFocus, Xenon flash, GPS tagging and 3G support. In related news, SE is also offering up the 518a Walkman (shown right) on the same carrier, which features a 3.2 megapixel camera, an obsession with Facebook, Shake Control and OTA music downloads from Napster and eMusic via AT&T Music. Both sets will be available on July 19th for $179.99 and $49.99 (respectively) after mail-in rebate and a two-year agreement, which sounds "way too high" and "too high" to us (also respectively).

Eh, they are on AT&T. Nice but its a shame.
Wow, I had been waiting and waiting and waiting for the c905a to hit AT&T but now that it has I’m really reluctant to get it since I’m now waiting for the Aino. But that will probably hit AT&T years later to.. so hmmm
It's nice to see AT&T pick up some good SE phones. Too many damned Samsungs in their lineup.
If AT&T is selling for $175, it should probably be way less or free at amazon and letstalk. Even though it's an year late C905a is probably the best phone out there for anyone looking for camera phone as it has Xenon flash plus they get the best non-smartphone OS on their phone.
I am getting two C905a's on a family-plan when Amazon sells.
Does it still have wifi? (c905a)
I've had this variant of the phone (C905a) for the past month and a half, and honestly, it's a good phone. I've debranded it off the Rogers firmware because the limitations. But be warned, the battery-life on this phone is quite horrible if you're stuck on 3G frequencies (must charge daily). I usually dabble in texting, a little bit of browsing, maybe take some pictures or even browse photos, and my battery is quite drained by the end of the day. If you debrand and switch to GSM frequencies only, then the battery will last about 2 days of normal usage.......... that's bad.
But other than that, it's a great phone with an awesome camera.
You may want to do a bit of tweaking and install some modded camera drivers after you've debranded it though.
Whether I'd suggest you getting two of them.... well.... I'm gonna be picking up a Nokia E55-NAM when they're available, if that's of any indication.
Read that the pictures aren't that great on the cybershot phone, was somewhat looking at it till I saw more samples of the pictures to verify this. Guess I'll wait for others.
i have seen the photos from this phone and they are fantastic.
i believe that you can look at some on flicker
personally am excited for this phone!
It's kind of bizarre that engadget frames it as SE 'letting us have' the c905 (neutered of WiFi with GPS tied to AT&T's service and various 3rd party[read: Google] internet apps disabled in the bargain) when the real issue is the US carrier demanding that the phone functionality be hobbled so that they can eke out profits from poor substitutes for what comes standard overseas.
Nevertheless, given the quality of the camera (less than the cheapest point-and-shoot camera but greater than any phone on the market), the $179 price tag is pretty fair. I would recommend debranding at one's earliest convenience, which is par for the course with US carriers, but I'll probably be picking up this phone.
