Toshiba TG01 passes FCC with some CDMA thrown in
The Snapdragon-powered Toshiba TG01 is a beast of a phone -- as Windows Mobile-powered phones go, anyway -- but for Americans, there's one small problem: it's not clear how, when, or if it's getting here. We still don't have many answers there, but we've got one piece of very encouraging news in the FCC approval of a CDMA flavor today, bearing all the hardware you'll need to use the phone on a carrier like... oh, you know, Sprint or Verizon. Even better, the test documents list the device as "production" -- many FCC filings use prototype hardware -- suggesting that this is pretty close to being ready for market. So, as we said, Sprint or Verizon have to be ramping up for this -- but which one is it? Both?

No end date for confidentiality? Can't say I've ever seen that before. It only states, "until publicly announced". Interesting.
I hope this comes to Sprint. A Verizon version of this device in a crippled state would be oh so sad!
this is confirmed as launching on VZW
Last I checked, you could uncripple a Verizon phone, but no one has found a way to uncripple Sprint's coverage or customer service.
Then you'd better check again.
Some of VZ's crippling is on a hardware level, and not all of it can be "uncrippled". Take the Touch Pro for example- you can't add the memory VZ took away from it, and in its current state the phone can barely run TouchFlo3D (one of the biggest selling points of the Diamond and Pro).
The only 2 Verizon customers I know that bought the Pro returned it. One even switched out of frustration with their lineup to hop on the GSM bandwagon.
Yes, sometimes, you can "uncripple" features, like the GPS in the Titan, but only because HTC mass-produced that model, and wasn't going to physically remove the chip from the run that Sprint and Telus had. So, Verizon just had a software-cripple put in place. You guys got lucky that time.
As far as Sprint's Customer Service- thankfully, you don't have to uncripple anything. They took care of that over a year ago when the new CEO tried to reinvent their image by hiring tons of new call centers here in the US (no more overseas reps who don't speak english, and you get a live rep within 1-2 rings who knows your account and *can help you*).
And as far as coverage... well, I suppose you weren't aware that Sprint has free roaming agreements with VZ, huh? We got service wherever you do, bub.
Its trollers like you, who clearly haven't seen Sprint first-hand in the last couple of years, that continue to give them a bad rep. Good like with your totalitarian provider who overcharges you in the name of a perceived "better service". If bad mouthing Sprint makes you feel better about your choice, I guess go for it.
You mentioned the one device that Verizon has crippled in terms of hardware to date. Can we also say that Sprint crippled their Snap, since the Verizon version (Ozone) is CDMA/GSM, while Sprint's is only CDMA?
Sorry, I'm not the troll. BlueRazr first posted something about how awful it would be for this phone to release to Verizon. I responded.
As for Sprint's amazing leaps in customer service, apparently no one else knows since Sprint continues to rank dead last in most wireless surveys. For one example, look at JD Power 2009, dead last in customer care and overall customer satisfaction.
Back on topic, so it would be nice to see the TG01 on Verizon.
like mobile enthusiast said sprint has roaming agreements with VZW so there is signal wherever you guys have it. Also did you see the current 3g tests that showed Sprint has the most reliable connection you know more dependable than the big 3?? I mean verizon also did good but isn't verizons data prices like doubled from sprint. If in my area sprint totally sucked then i would go with verizon but if both are good is more than common sense to go for the cheapest one, unless you-re rich or either feel good about verizons commercial and don't mind getting raped just to have VZW.
If i find myself in an area that sprint doesn't have coverage i know we have free american roaming and will use verizons tower to talk is not like I am going to be completely without a signal.
Its too early for anyone to know who will get this. This is probably go on both networks. Both NEED this type of phone. T-Mobile is has the mytouch3G, AT&T has the 3GS so BOTH Sprint & VZW NEED the TG01. Sprint has the Palm Pre but the rumored high return rate will not do any good to them. They need to keep pumping up the device line up.
Well as for VZW, when you VZW Corp & VOD has your owners, you can definitely add this to their line up. Money is not a problem, especially when VOD is the 2nd largest world operator behind China Unicom.
They've both already got the Touch Pro 2 on the way, which i personally believe will be a better device for them than the TG01. The latter needs to be more finger-friendly, while the former is not only adept in this area (for a WinMo device), it's also got a great keyboard.
VZW will get this phone in the fall. I dunno about Sprint. But I have mentioned this phone several times. I have seen it in VZW promotional and Good Mobile Messaging promotional material. Expect sometime around 3rd quarter.
Aren't there only like 9 weeks left in 3rd quarter?
Yeah, give or take. 1) thats over 2 months 2) I said around 3rd quarter. So if it comes out beginning of 4th I'm still in the ballpark.
Sorry, didn't mean to sound like I didn't believe you, it's just surprising that that's even a possibility. Especially considering that today is the first we've even heard about a CDMA version, at least as far as I know.
crossing my fingers for sprint
I might like this over a hero or touch pro2.. because it will be wayyyyyyyyyyy faster and xda will probably get the hero and touch pro2 os running on it anyway..... I love my touch pro energy rom is ridiculous wm6.5 and touch flo 3d2.. But The screen is too small what they need to do is move the direction pad onto the keyboard... a physical directional pad or track ball is HUGE... The iphone would or touch pro2 would be better by a huge amount with just that simple addition gaming would be exponentially better and web browsing is alot easier too when you have the option to down click to small links..
I smell verizon! Sprint never did have real global phones....
Actually Sprint has 3 international phones right now, the Ace, the Blackberry 8830, and the Blackberry Tour, sooooo.....
Also, to the people who keep commenting about Sprint's customer service, they have improved more than any other carrier month over month, and have for 18 months. That is based on independent testing from third parties. They also rank BEST in answer time among all US carriers.JD power did the surveys, and while Sprint still shows last (for now), they have consistently gained at least 3 points per survey, more than anyone else. Google it. I am not partial to phones going to any carrier, but i do hate when people spout off fanboy convenience without anything to back it up. Verizon did cripple both the HTC Diamond and Pro, removing memory, accelerometer, and putting in slower processors, yet charge the same price for the devices. They claim this will be less moving forward, although it remains to be seen. If they do indeed get the Pre, and remove wifi and cripple the processor and memory, well- you know.
Sprint customer service has always been helpful to me.
