Verizon rumored to be pushing up LTE plans to Q1 2010, new Apple device the catalyst?
So we already knew Verizon was looking to push LTE out the door and to about 20 to 30 markets in the second half of 2010, but Tech Crunch's got it on good word that the company's doing everything in its power to get the service ready to go in a number of areas in time for Q1 2010. That's interesting in and of itself, but together with this morning's whispers of Apple's tablet coming early next year and past talk of an Apple / VZW partnership, and the tale gets exponentially more intriguing. As TC suggests, a tablet lacking voice service on the LTE network wouldn't violate AT&T's not-at-all permanent exclusivity. Its source said there was one LTE device, not a wireless card, that this early launch was being "specifically geared towards," but even if so, that could apply to any number of other non-Apple gadgets (from Nokia, perhaps?). Of course, much of this is rumor built on rumor, so no matter how well these pieces might seem to fall in place -- or how potentially awesome the idea might seem -- there's a large grain of salt you should be taking with you.

Looks like we'll be waiting a while for an Apple device on Verizon if it's LTE at least out in the boonies where I live... I guess I'll have to give AT&T a try when they take over Alltel here.
The only problem with this theory is that the tablet would only work in the US, and Apple never launches US-only products. This is the reason they chose AT&T, because it is a GSM network that the rest of the world uses, as opposed to CDMA (Excluding parts of South America & Korea).
LTE is the global standard for 4G. Why wouldn't Apple make a device to operate on this standard?
As long as it had the radios for the US and Europe, it would function just fine on VZW's network as it would overseas; RE BB Tour...
LTE may be a standard, but it certainly won't be everywhere when it launches. I mean, they are talking about 20-30 markets at most out of a potential 300+, and even then, what happens when your out on the road? Your phone doesn't work?
The $1 million question is what network is a Verizon iPhone going to fall back on when it no longer is in the range of its LTE network. If it's T-Mobile's through some agreement, then I have no doubt there will be problems with network demand (plus, their 3G band isn't the same as the rest of the world). If they fall back on Verizon's network, then that means all the CDMA posturing Apple was blowing was just thin air.

I think your comment belongs somewhere in the midst of about 5 years in the past. A large portion of Verizon's lineup is now CDMA/GSM Global capable. You must have missed the Storm or the Saga or the plethora of global capable USB Data Cards...or most recently the Tour launch.
I know it's hard to believe....but Verizon is Global capable and I don't see what makes you think that they won't put that capability into a VerApple product.
I'm going to inject a little dose of reality...The only thing that has kept AT&T competing with Vergiant is the iPhone. Verizon WILL have Apple products and that will spell doom for AT&T. You can't tell me AT&T's lineup of phones (aside from the iPhone) is all that great.
First off....no! verizon has now globla devices! hell we have a hp notebook that has global
capabilities, so more than likely this apple divice will be global! not U.S only!!!
i can't wait for this device to come to verizon ! =D
It wouldn't be CDMA, it'd be LTE. And, isn't LTE going to be more of a global standard though? Only thing I'd wonder about is the 5gb limit with current broadband plans. I wonder if that'll be increased.
more than likely yes! i hear that beacuse the Lte network that vzw is gona lunch is sooo huge the speed in download would
iincrees from the current 1 to almost fios speeds! also that they would incress the cap to 15 gigs !!!
imangine that!
There will be a iPhone on Verizon.
If this device comes out on verizon it will fail. Verizon will cripple it, just like the rest of their hardware. Consumers will not get the full Mac expirience. In turn, they could lose potential Mac buyers. I'm sure it'll be loaded up with all of verizon's add on crap.
I'll keep my MacBook and AT&T card.
Nothing is locked down on our network anymore. Grow up please, thank you.
I'll believe it when I see it.
yea and Apple is really going to allow them to alter their device. if the device is good enough that Verizon wants to roll out it's next gen network months ahead of time, i think Apple would be the one calling the shots. you gotta think who is doing who a favor here, an Apple device on any network is instant sales.
(and for the record, i'm a long time Verizon customer who has had many a crippled phone and an MS supporter.)
The only thing Verizon Wireless about their current HP Netbook is the default wallpaper and the program that connects the embedded air card to the network.
You sir, are very ignorant. Hell, the iPhone is the most locked phone out there...you have to jailbreak it to make it worth anything.
By the way....you are using a Macbook....automatic cripple! You fail.
Where's the Omnia II? Android phones?
Something other than blackberries please.
Android coming before Christmas... I think.
Verizon unlocking GPS and nothing else doesn't mean they stopped restricting
Knowing Apple these days it'll just be another iPhone 3g with a new name...where's the innovation? Microsoft and Apple are becoming more alike..
CrunchPad may be pushing Apple to move up its schedule. Apple device supposed to be $800, CrunchPad supposed to be $300. Apple tied up with a carrier ready to extort big bucks out of us. I'll take the CrunchPad!
Were not restricting anything. Why are you people so dumb? If you don't know the right information, then DON'T speak.
Yes and you are so sure you have the right information because.....? Not sure what society your living in but everyone has the right to speak, regardless of what they have to say; if you can't take criticism you clearly shouldn't be positing in a public forum.
^ Call a whambulance for this lil' biotch (wirelessinformer)
Yes, it is a public forum...however, wouldn't it be nice if the crap that spews forth from their cranium held any significant truths to it?
I would like to come here one day and see an entire thread with nothing but confirmed truths not little whiny ass comments like this.
Here, have a dose of reality: There will never be one single device that will ever suit everyone's needs 100%, it will never ever happen; that is a fact!
But if you want to be perfect, use a Blackberry....God does (also a fact)
I don't know about your society Mr. WirelessInformer, but you can leave my society alone....Thanks in advance!
With Microsoft and Apple, thats what happens with big corporations in a maturing market, work out what sells and then sell it.
Having said that, the LTE looks pretty cool.
All this buzz over LTE devices seems a little premature. A Mac tablet or Netbook is probably coming in the next year or possibly two. Verizon they won't even begin adding markets until the second half of next year, and that's if everything rolls out as planned. WiMAX on the other hand has already launched in a couple of markets and many more will by online by the end of THIS year on Sprint/Clear's network with more on the way early next year. Intel has invested lots of money and effort into WiMAX and chipsets that support the service will be here soon, possibly making their way into new Apple products. Regardless, I really hope Apple doesn't enter another exclusive agreement with another overpriced like Verizon.
speaking of Apple's non-permanent exclusivity, there has been a lot of discussion in the media about the validity of their contract with AT&T. Some people think it should be illegal (as well as all other cell phone carriers), while others think it helps innovation. http://www.newsy.com/videos/exclusivity_stifling_or_innovative
