Perhaps the big G spoke too soon when it said its new
Google Voice service was coming to iPhone. First, GV Mobile developer Sean Kovacs relays a phone call he had with Apple where he was notified of his app being removed from the iTunes store for duplicating built-in iPhone features -- an app that was originally and purportedly approved by Phil Schiller himself. Next out the door was GVdialer, and if you thought that was all bad, now comes word that Google's official Voice app was flat-out rejected by Cupertino. Now it's hard to say with certainty who's to blame for these app rejections, but a good many fingers are pointing to the cellular carriers -- and given
AT&T's previous statements about the SlingPlayer app, it's hard to argue with that. For its part, the company hinted at finding a workaround via web apps, much like they did when Apple gave
Latitude a cold shoulder -- but doesn't that
feel just a little 2007?

Boooooooooo... GV FTW!!!
Yeah, WTF Apple? I guess you've invited the Federal Government to finally step in and give consumers a bill of rights. we need all devices to be free, I dont want to be told what apps I can have and which ones I cant. Fuck AT&T and Apple!
So what's the betting that Apple will reject the upcoming Spotify app too.
Way to drive more of us to Android guys....
Damn you ATT!!!!!!!!! Apple too. Blackberry's are sure looking good right about now. Hell, I cant wait for more Android
phones to come out.
I just started using the GV app on my BlackBerry Bold and it works great, so I'm not so certain it's AT&T's doing.
Good decision Apple. I think the missing part of the Apple logo is nothing but their brain.
Keep killing the competitive products and continue teaching what is right and wrong. Now I feel really dumb buying an iPhone.
...this is really disappointing.... the policy of duplicating Apple's own apps & the worry that consumers will get 'confused' really makes no sense (in fact is just a very poor excuse on Apple's part). Cases in point... the are how many calculator applications? they all add, subtract, multiply & divide just like the one that Apple shipped w/ the iPhone, but some how their 'duplication' is allowed? [big WTF there !] .. & the GPS apps, they all have maps but they are OK, but Google latitude no ? [head scratch] ... Apple please let go of the reins, this is why the iPhone is/was to be cool, it was like getting a very portable computing device that could be as diverse as one wanted it to be just like one's computer (Mac or PC). There aren't the same restrictions on the Mac so why on the iPhone? why does the iPhone need to be different? i can install Office Mac instead of iWork & i'm not damned ... & i'm even grown up enough to tell the difference between the apps.
..Please let us (the people) make our own decision as to what apps we want or don't want & (Apple) just focus on making sure it all 'just works' & stop focusing on what app is better for me to run.... otherwise i will be be running a different device. [i promise]
(i'm a happy iPhone 1st gen user who is looking forward to upgrading to a 3G s, but things like this make me reconsider my decision & hold off ... )

Jailbreak Away!! I can't think of a better reason not to after this BS
And this, my friends, is why the iPhone sucks. I should be able to install and do whatever I want with my phone instead of having good ol' Stevie in Cupertino tell me what is cool and what is not. Thank God I have Windows Mobile...
I'd guess these App bans are 100% political. I'd pay money to be a fly on the wall in one of those meetings where the cigar-smoking fatcats make deals to regulate the massive amounts of money they're making.
No Ryan R, the iPhone doesn't suck... it's still amazing... Apple's policies and ATT are the things that are doing the sucking. :-)
My fingers are cross in hopes that Apple will not renew exclusivity with ATT.
How would having this app impact AT&T?
If someone calls my GV number, I still get a cellular call to my phone that I am paying for.
If I dial out using GV dialer, I still get an inbound call to my phone connecting me the the remote party ... again I still pay for inbound calls.
Long distance is free on AT&T so that isn't a factor.
Why would AT&T object? INTL calling?
Someone enlighten me.
Actually, wouldn't it *help* AT&T in most cases?
If you are calling other AT&T customers using it, there is no Mobile-to-Mobile freebies!
@Proto
AT&T, and all the other carriers for that matter, don't like GV because it makes it even easier to switch carriers than it already is with number porting. If you switch carriers and use GV all it takes is 2 minutes to changes your phone forwarding prefs. You don't even have to call your new carrier to port over your number if you don't want to.
