Verizon Wireless and AT&T engage in legal fisticuffs over ad slogans
Which North American wireless provider do you think is telling the truth in its advertising? If you answered "none of 'em," you're probably right, but that's not stopping Verizon Wireless from going to court to uphold its commercial honor, having been called out by AT&T earlier this month. VZW took the A train down to US District Court in Manhattan asking that its slogans like "America's Most Reliable 3G Network" be validated, claims AT&T earlier said were false. We're not quite sure why 'ol Blue and White is getting feisty, since it's had its fair share of issues, but maybe this is just some attempt to make the two look like they hate each other in public while exchanging sweet nothings and text messaging price hikes in private. All we know is this isn't the first time carriers have battled over such claims, and it sure won't be the last.

Ya you can usually lie in commercials in the USA.
Not so much in GB.
I guess I kind of wish they wouldn't lie.
Tim why do you call ATT, America's Least Reliable 3G Network, I have never had a problem and know allot of people that do not have any issues with ATT. Yet I noticed that you writers seem to always have an negative opinion of ATT and a positive of Verizon. How about some neutrality and reporting simply the facts.
Your kidding me right? Engadget may be biased toward Apple but they in no way show favoritism to Verizon. In fact I think they give both an equal ripping.
@Miacol
Because neutrality isn't the name of the game here. Hop on over to BGR and look at carrier wars. AT&T's own subscribers submitting speed tests of their data network...and then they did the same with Verizon! Completely blew AT&T out of the water.
AT&T commercials are just windbag, full of sh!t scheme to get you to subscribe. I can tell you from owning both and using it while traveling (as a real user, not a stupid test study in one area) Verizon is the 200% better than AT&T will ever be.
They both should just stop and let Sprint say they are the most dependable 3g network!
In the latest study from PC World...
Sprint beat them both!
From PCWorld's subjective, unscientific "study":
"Verizon was proclaimed as having the best average in download speeds at 951 kbps with an almost comparable reliability score with Sprint. As for AT&T, it edged out Sprint in terms of average download speed at 660 kbps."
Maybe, just maybe that's why.
Do a little reading first.
We are talking about the most dependable network not the fastest speed.
The point being, Junior, that if one actually reads the complete content and context of the original publication, one takes away a different conclusion that that which carrier-trolls, such as yourself, spam thru the interwebs.
Fuck you -and- your selective ignorance.
Have a pleasant day!
The only reliable thing about Verizon is being nickeled and dimed to death!
What exactly are the nickeling and dimeing you with that any other carrier doesn't?
Do you expect them to all of a sudden become a non-profit charity for your greedy ass? Seriously, grow up!
Verizon nickels and dimes customers beyond just their regular rate plan. I am a multi network dealer (meaning i sell sprint and t-mobile and ATT and Verizon) and the number one complaint i hear is that a Verizon customer's bill is never the same. They are always "nickeling and diming" customers any which way they can, while someone from sprint sees the same bill every month.
Even in a big city like "Toledo" thats the one near Detroit, MI the new iPhone 3GS (where s stands for switching constantly or slow..) drops to E or edge all the time, even when there was 4-5bars of 3G. This happens on the first and second floors so no excuse for trees or other obstacles, the tower is a little over 1 mile away... Excuses at&t???
Having had both AT&T, and Verizon in the Baltimore, MD area. AT&T is horrible! Worst coverage ever. After a while, I'd know where the dead spots where. I'd tell the person on the other end, I'm approaching Patterson Park, (or one of the many, many signal free zones) I'm going to lose you now.
I live downtown in the city. I couldn't get a reliable signal in my own home. Most of the time I got zero bars. Then I'd suddenly have 5 bars. Then nothing. Or it would say extended coverage area, even though I'm hundreds of miles from the edge of my area.
I love the iphone, but I wouldn't switch to AT&T to get it. Many of my friends have them. They are great pocket computers. Calling people is hit or miss, but you can play a games.
More bars in more places is good, because with AT&T's lack of coverage you're gonna need to do a lot of drinking!
^Speak the truth!
Seriously if you live in Baltimore you need Sprint. They tested their 4G network there and have "overkill" of coverage in that area. now granted they don't have a 4G phone on the market (wait a couple months and they will) but Sprint will work for you.
Regardless who is better, if one is claiming they are more reliable, and the other says prove it or you are lying, then the other should at least provide proof.
After all, lying will make you lool stupid without an iphone on our network.
They both have good and bad areas... that is a given.
However, as much as I don't like Verizon, it's a safe bet to say that they're network "overall," is better performing that AT&T in terms of 3G scale and reliability.
Blame the iPhone or AT&T's poor technology execution, their network is not on the same level. They just got a big head when they bought ATT Wireless and all of a sudden had a customer base that rivaled Verizon Wireless. Immediately following that, they started touting the fewest dropped calls and other network related boasts that up to that time were only really advertised by Verizon.
Don't get me wrong, AT&T does perform well for some. I think it's pretty self evident though through all the complaints all over the web that AT&T has some serious network issues they need to tackle and solve before they start fighting a war of words with a network that doesn't have the same level of disatisfaction.

AT&T is awesome in the New York metro area...I suppose it could be worse.
every carrier is probably awesome in the nyc metro area......
I can't wait for AT&T to get their arses handed to them on this one! Being a new iPhone user and former Verizon customer, I can tell you that AT&T is pure crud when it comes to reliable service.
When it's connected with decent strength, it's fine, but more times than not, I'm finding myself w/out good or no service at all. I don't live in the boonies either. This is in downtown Atlanta and Marietta Georgia just outside of the city.
I can't even get a bar inside my office which sits elevated over the surrounding areas.
Get 'em Verizon!!!!
I have personally worked for both Verizon and AT&T; thus carrying both services. AT&T was the most recent of the two employers. I am from the St Louis area, where signal strength is not that big of an issue as long as you're home. It is when you leave the confines of the city where you can really test reliabiliy. I've carried the iPhone and the BB Storm/LG Dare over the past several months. I can undoubtedly say that Verizon's 3G network is far more superior than AT&Ts. One of the better tests of these results stem from traveling 8 hours listening to Pandora, Slacker Radio, and I (heart) radio. AT&Ts reception made the listening experience on the iPhone unbearable, even within heavily populated areas, with it's constant switching from 3G to Edge. The BB Storm on Verizon's network had minimal interruption while maintaining 1XEVDO for most of the trip, even in mountainous areas. 1Xev/1x, which is Verizon indication of roaming or minimal signal, is actually sufficient enough to keep such programming going. EDGE will barely let you recieve and respond to a text email. As mentioned before, AT&T is my most recent employer, yet even providing me with free service on the iPhone was not enough to make me cancel Verizon.
AT&Ts bright side, needless to say, is the iPhone's superior design and dominance in the smartphone arena. It kills my Storm and every other touchscreen/smartphone out there. Crazy thing is, I was anti-iPhone until i got one. AT&T falls short, however, with its other options in handset selection. Visit both stores, you will find the Verizon rep full of suggestions with there well rounded selection of handsets. Enter into an AT&T store, you will find that rep pointing grandma, the newborn, the bum and everyone else to the iPhone. The Bold and Curve are their fall backs and after that they are like, "well maybe you"ll like this piece o' crap!"
Thats what i said they had the most dependable network!
Isn't that what we are talking about here?
No. Not unless you haven't the ability to discern the content and context of the original publication.
Only scum-sucking carrier-trolls would have you believe otherwise.
Idiot.
