Motorola Sholes Android phone headed for Verizon?

On the lookout for the Motorola / Android / Verizon trifecta, we dug up some handset renders over at motofan.ru that seem to fit the bill quite well, thank you. According to the site, "Sholes" is a 3.7-inch (480 x 854) touchscreen device that will make its debut in the U.S. in October, featuring: 512MB storage, 256MB RAM, support for microSD / microSDHC up to 16 GB (an 8GB microSD ships with the phone), a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, GPS, and the expected connectivity (USB, Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi), audio, and video formats. And if the translation wasn't hopelessly garbled, the source is also saying that this bad boy will support both CDMA and EVDO Rev A . No word on a price yet, but if this phone does make it to the realm of the real it'll be nice to see a Moto / Android device that doesn't look like it belongs in the hands of a tweenage girl (yeah, we said it, Morrison). See for yourself after the break.

Why must phone companies keep putting the Dpad on the right?????
Because most people are right handed.
and so am I, but left sided dpads are way more familiar and comfortable. how many millions of people are familiar and comfortable with gaming style game pads where the directional pad is always on the left? i cant even think of any electronic device that ive ever used that had a right side dpad that was comfortable for anything more than flipping through simple menus. my desktop has a right side mouse but a landscape phone is so much closer to gamepad than a desktop that it seems silly to me that anyone would prefer a right side dpad to a left side one. especially (but not limited to) for games. its like they're are fore fitting any type of comfortable game play even before the device comes out by their hardware choices.
and before anyone says it, i do have a PSP, but that's not the point. and saying "its for business" is such a cop out. who wouldn't want to do as much with their "do it all" device as they can?
Ugh...this looks like a sick phone. Now i have to decide between this and the tp2. What a hard decision!
I think having Android over Winmo beats having an HTC phone over a Motorola one.
I dont like the keyboard already. It should have a 4 row keyboard. Why do verizon keyboards suck so much the envi does the same thing
@ Geoff
*looks at picture*
*counts rows of keys*
1, 2, 3, 4
I count 4.
Your a fucking idiot its a phone manufaturer flaw not a VZW flaw do you always point your finger at somthing other than the problem
When was the last time you got your eyes checked again? Just wondering.
I've been hearing about this for a while now. It's nice to finally see it.
Why only 256mB RAM ?
Any rumours on which gpgpu will be in this ?
Otherwise great looking phone, with direct access to numbers on the fourth row. It's nice to see some competition to the se rachael.
And i am waiting to read about the new htc for the fall/holliday season. Orange has started dumping prices on the htc g1/dream so it shouldn't be long...
that phone looks really slick. i was saving my moneyto bolt for the Pre but VZW is apparently starting to make it's lineup not suck anymore. othe cheaper Sprint plans are the only thing really still making Sprint an option right now especially since VZW is rumored to be getting the Pre too.
Looks like a pretty slick model. Maybe Moto is going to start getting it right once again.
Don't know about you but man, this is good news!! This could save motorola! Hurry peeps over @ moto.
Great looking phone. Great to see Motorola coming up with something decent in the smartphone realm.
I like the look of this phone but I dont see why they dont center the keyboard. If you are going to be ergonomic like the iphone you need to be centered. Its very awkward when your typing with your hands off set. You dont have to be a genius to figur that out. I hope its not too thick and bulky. It woulld be nice to have atleast 640-480 video res. I could deal with that.
The article says it has 480 x 854, which is greater than 640x480.
I was talking about the video recording resolution.
Actually, having owned an enV a few years back, I can say that the offset typing is not that big of a deal. You adjust very quickly.
I just like have a keyboard that has 3 rows of letters not interrupted by a space bar and another row for numbers. So what I like is a 5 row keyboard. I feel you can get so much more out of it that way
Interesting, still curious about processor speed though. With the TP2 ROM reaching "shipped" status, and supposedly demo units reaching the hands of certain corp customers, these two could both hit VZW within a month of each other.
Decisions, decisions.
I'm curious too. As long as it doesn't have the same old crappy Qualcomm processor as most of the recent HTC's it should be good considering the rest of the specs.
Wow! This looks like one freaking awesome phone! Motorola is really coming out swinging for the fences with this one.
i heard a September release date for tp2
Where is the chin? The 11th Commandment is: "Thou Shalt Not Make Android Phone Without A Chinny Chin Chin"
How come T-mobile opted for the morrison instead of this sleek moto device?
The good:
480x852 screen 3.7" touch screen
5 megapixel camera
physical keyboard with dedicated number row
dpad
The bad:
CDMA/EVDO on Verizon, instead of being a GSM phone
4 row keyboard instead of 5
dpad is on the keyboard, not the face
While the memory is better than the G1, it still seems a little anaemic to me.
But, it's the first post-G1 android device I've thought about.
You have to remember that 256 is what the *new* iphone has, the older ones had half that, and as far as CDMA/EVDO, you gotta expect that coming from Verizon, as they are a CDMA/EVDO carrier.
Looking at the stats of this phone versus the iphone 3gs, this phone blows the iphone out of the fucking water. Jury's still out on the CPU/GPU, but the resolution will trench the iphone, internal memory is on par with the greatest of iphones, and goddamn if it doesn't have the SD slot that the iphone is too big of an asshole to put on there. Combine that with the android platform, which is *far* more open than iphone will ever be, open enough to get flash, this phone could kill apple's hegemony over the chic smart phone realm. If it's marketed properly...
Here is the 3rd phone I would be willing to upgrade if it ever comes out on Verizon. Why is there nothing right now. I am eligible to upgrade and it's like a kid with a dollar in their pocket.
Will say this is probably the hottest android phone going right now.
Finally! A seemingly good phone from Moto!
i want to know if it will have multitouch and just how responsive the touchscreen is period. if its as responsive as the iPhone and Pre then im sold.
Is there a Windows button on the screen? WM7 maybe...
Lol, but since it's verizon I bet you 100 bucks that it will AT LEAST be as much as the black berry storm 2 if not more. (You are probably looking in the $300+ range) Stupid Verizon and their greediness.
