Verizon's HTC Whitestone leaks out, along with the HTC Mega and Tachi
We've been hearing about Verizon's upcoming HTC Whitestone for a while now, and it looks like a new pic and specs for the upcoming dual-mode CDMA / GSM Touch Diamond2 variant have leaked out. Seems like a mixed bag -- the revised case with a larger 3.6-inch WVGA display is impressive, but inside you're looking at Windows Mobile 6.1 running on a 528MHz Qualcomm processor with 256MB of RAM, so you've certainly lived through this experience before. That's pretty much the same case with the HTC Mega, which also leaked today: although it'll ship with WinMo 6.5 and that hot new version of TouchFLO 2D, it's a lower-end device with a 2.8-inch QVGA display, a three megapixel camera and yet another 528MHz Qualcomm proc with 256MB of RAM running the show. Oh, and just to round things out, there's a pic of the Dopod-branded HTC Tachi, which probably means this one's headed for China. Always nice to put a face to a name, though isn't it? Pics of the Mega and Tachi at the read link.

this sounds so backwards, winmobile 6.5 should be on the whitestone with the 3.6 inch display. Instead they put it on the Mega with the crappy little 2.8 inch display. No touchscreen device should have a display of less than 3 inches.
Does this mean that the Mega won't launch for a while, due to it having 6.5? I'm confused by that as well... I'm still stoked for the Whitestone though.
Same old crappy Qualcomm processor, no thanks.
They need to beef up their qualcomm processors or use a different one altogether. The same 528MHz one has been used in the past 1-2 years and isn't very responsive in Windows Mobile anything! so I don't see the next crop of phones being lag-free.
More failed attempts at being iPhone killers. HTC really needs to beef up the processor. I don't care if the phone has a 5MP camera if it takes 30 seconds for it to load.
It's 32% faster than the processor in the 3G, and only 12% slower than the processor in the 3GS. Maybe HTC should drop WinMo, and get a nice little locked down children's OS like the iPhone. I bet if the Whitestone only let you run one thing at a time, it'd be faster too.
Not at all-- the iPhone 3GS has an ARM Cortex A8 CPU, which is twice as fast clock-for-clock than ARM11 CPUs like the Qualcomm MSM7200 (used by HTC) and the Samsung chip in the iPhone 3G. The 3GS is roughly 2.2x faster than the MSM7200 in general CPU performance, around 50x faster in floating-point operations (MSM7200 lacks hardware VFP and so relies on a WM DLL to handle FPU ops), with a graphics chip that's >10x faster.
Since the iPhone/iPhone 3G has a hardware VFP, it's around 20-25x faster clock-for-clock at floating-point ops (which iPhone OS uses pretty heavily but WinMo doesn't at all, as it's optimized for the ancient ARMv5 instruction set-- some native WM apps can make use of it if present, though).
Why are you talking about the MSM7200, when this should be running MSM7600?
When the iPhone can do more than one thing at a time, then we can sit down and compare actual load times, response times, etc. Right now, it's apples to oranges.
So the Whitestone is a TP2 without the keyboard? HTC is really going all out.
The Whitestone is a TP2 without the keyboard. HTC is just going through the motions now.
Did you just ask and answer your own question?
Guh-ross.
I doubt it will look anything like that once Verizon releases it, but I agree.
Ive got a touch HD, and that doesnt lag too much. The iphone 3G seems faster because it doesnt have any background apps running since it cant multitask, remember the iphone 3G has a cpu running at 412mhz and only 128mb RAM. The 3GS is just what u get with a faster cpu and more RAM for an OS that can't multitask, as why it is VERY responsive. I prefer multitasking than just having to wait a extra second or two for an app to open. But i agree, the HD has been out for almost a year and they still use the same processor with LESS RAM than my HD? wtf?
I found this nice blog and read a lot in it - so I will visit it in future one time a week to read in it.
That is the Phone I dream of....!
Never saw a so good Phone - I want it - I love it.
I would buy it here but you don´t get it here.

Snapdragon, hello?
I'm so disappointed (again) that this is the best that Verizon will have to offer by the time my contract is up. I really, really wanted to get another PDA phone but they're killing me here, especially now that I've been a proud owner of an Apple iPod touch for a few weeks and seen how much smoother and easier to use it is than my XV6800. Yeah, I know, I'm a couple generations behind with that 6800, but still. I'm not a very sophisticated user and I'm just looking for a reason not to jump ship.
Like Rob said, I just don't get why the Whitestone won't run with WinMo 6.5 when the Firestone and Mega are both rumored to. I also don't understand why the GSM phone Firestone gets the rumored 600Mhz processor, 8 MP camera and WinMo 6.5, and the CDMA Whitestone gets none of those. I just don't get it!
The market has already decided that WinMo is dead! So HTC has become irrelevant!
are you forgetting about the HTC Hero?
Everybody, including HTC, are moving over to android. And it's going to be nice.
Yay, another crappy WinMo phone with piss-poor touch response that needs to be rebooted once a day.
