Palm quietly improving Pre build quality, tweaking hardware
It's not the most comprehensive survey, nor is there any official confirmation, but the crew at PreThinking has checked in with a number of new Pre owners and discovered that Palm's apparently building its webOS handset better lately -- and what's more, it's even made some minor improvements. The biggest change appears to be a fix for that nasty bug that caused the Pre to reset or turn off when the keyboard was closed -- that bit of grey foam pictured was added to the battery compartment to tighten up the battery connection. There's a also word that the screen cracking and unintended rotation issues have been addressed, although time will tell on those, and the button color has changed from pearl to silver. As for improvements, well, there's a new battery model, and the Palm logo is now embossed on the carrying case. Yep, just little stuff, but it's good to see Palm addressing the build issues on the Pre, which are by far the most common complaint about the device. Let us know if you've spotted anything else, would you?

I bought my Pre over a month ago, and it had the Palm logo on the case, and the silver button already.
My Pre randomly still turns off from time to time.
This is good to hear. My girlfriend's contract will be up for renewal in September and she likes the Pre, but I've been wary about getting her one with the loose hinge and cracked screen issues.
Hopefully these problems will be old news by the time she gets around to upgrading. =)
Thanks for sharing ;)
How about making it slightly larger.... Still way to small for me.... :(
@big_psirex
I completely agree with you. The size of it is just a tad too small. If they would have made it a bit larger with a LANSCAPE keyboard, not that stupid portrait keyboard, this thing would be one of the best phones out there.
I like Palm sticking with the portrait keyboard, but I wish they wouldn't have gone with the gel keys from the Centro/Treo Pro. I think my Treo 800w has the best keyboard of any phone I've ever had - there's plenty of other stuff to complain about when you're talking about the 800w, but the keyboard sure isn't one of them.
I like the portrait keyboard because I'm still in school so I can't use both hands while texting lol. However, in response to soydeedo, I feel like any keyboard takes a bit of getting used to. Give it a few weeks/months it'll be a great keyboard; I know I'm slowly getting better at typing on it.
I started using my wired headset for the first time since I got the Pre in June and I found that the headset jack has a short in it. Making any calls with it plugged in can cause a huge amount of static on the other end and for those with bluetooth headsets on the other end, i'm so sorry! lol
After playing around with it a while, i found that if i open the keyboard, the static stops and then sometimes i can actually close the keyboard without the static coming back. Wiggle or bump it and you're back to square one. Now...just to make that 50 mile drive to the closest service center because Sprint won't replace it over the phone....jackasses.
Just wanted to let you know that my screen on the Pre cracked while charging. no bump or anything just cracked from the inside. Sprint says is not covered under warranty and Palm told me the same thing.
days with the phone and I'm SOL.
I hope Palm and Sprint get to it and fix this issue.
