Qik for iPhone 3GS now available, still not capable of live 3G streaming
So, there's good news and bad news. The good news is that Qik for iPhone 3GS is now available, and it's completely gratis to download. The bad news is that it probably won't do exactly what you want it to. You see, those on Symbian S60 have grown used to a Qik that can actually stream live video to the internet, whereas this app is currently just a "capture and upload" piece. Moreover, it only works via WiFi, so if you're not near a hotspot once your video is done, you'll have to wait until you wander back over to one before it automatically begins uploading. Though, you can let the app automatically inform viewers of where the video was taken (in case you feel like pampering guests who show up unannounced), and you can also frame the video horizontally or vertically. The Qik team assures us that an update is in the works to add 3G uploading, but for now, it's WiFi or bust. Which is kosher so long as it's free... we guess.

in first line, " and it's completely gratis to download", what is "gratis" mean? lol
"gratis" is the spanish word for "free"
I'm sure 3G streaming capability was simply an omission on the developers' part. Yeah right. Yet another example of Apple having to play bandwidth police due to AT&T's capacity issues.
So in other words, this application has no point to it. Once would just use the camera to upload video to wherever.
T-Mobiles Qik does, of course work the way it should on Android. Yeah, you know it.
and people stand in line for an Apple iPhone on AT&T's network...why? I sadly have to admit that I really do want an iPhone, but I'm not willing to leave Verizon for it. But even still, if it ever did come to Verizon (on LTE...please?) I'm not sure the device would ever be worth it.
Apple is just a pain in the...well...you get the point.
The more I follow the tech trends, the more I realize the iPhone is a great interface and smooth OS in an otherwise outdated hardware package with too many restrictions on an inferior network. It has it's pluses and minuses that make it more of a niche phone than they greatest phone ever (like BB's, WinMo, Android, etc). Clearly, the hysteria surrounding it stems more from the masses suffering from a severe lack of knowledge outside the boundaries of Apple's major marketing blitz. I love my iPod Touch, but it's not a world beater of a device as a phone, and I'm certainly not selling the farm to get it by leaving Verizon.
Agreed. I love QIK on my Windows Mobile device for what seems like forever now!
As a G1 user on T-Mobile, I used Qik frequently and am actually very surprised it does not stream on the iPhone.
While the G1's video/audio quality is not up to my expectations, Qik works as it should, all the time. Even when using Edge connections, it doesn't stream well but the videos still upload for viewing.
Since the iPhone has very high quality video, I wonder if it is a CPU limitation with resizing and changing the bit rate in real time?
Thank God for jail breaks and the 3G Unrestricter :-)
Qik with live streaming ha been available in the cydia apps forever. No 3g unrestrictor. Just works.
I'm confused how Qik is different from the default YouTube app on the iPhone. With a YouTube account and my 3GS, I can record/share videos via email, Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, etc...all over 3G or Edge. How is Qik special?
It streams the video live
