The
last video we posted of the Storm 2 doing its
SurePress thing has been unceremoniously pulled from YouTube, but this new video really makes up for it. It turns out the screen uses
piezo electronics to detect pressure at any point on the screen, instead of the all-or-nothing click button on the Storm 1, and our video host was kind enough to explain this in painstaking detail in the video embedded after the break. The screen actually stiffens when it's off or locked, and has a sort of spongy give to it when alive. He also confirmed in no uncertain terms the GSM and CDMA versions of the device will be packing WiFi. According to his Twitter account, we should be expecting a video about the OS soon as well.
[Thanks, Kristjan]
What I love BEST about this video is that this guy came prepared. All of those sticky notes were damn useful!
This guy must have never used an iPhone 3G or 3GS. You can type just as fast on an iPhone with the auto correct and you can move your finger to the next key before the software catches up. He was better off just comparing the storm 1 to the new version. Aside from a screen and a few buttons I hope they raised the camera megapixel count, processing speed, memory or something to make this a big difference from the first looks like RIM is ripping off Storm 1 owners but thank you for GSM version!
Ditto your comments on the comparison. I own a VZW Storm and an iPhone 3G, and am not a big texter but can bang out TMs and emails on the iPhone PDQ - I had to pop for Vlingo Pro to keep myself from chucking the Storm into the ocean. The OS and hardware for the Storm 2 and the iPhone 3G look to be sweet competitors.
I keep thinking how sweet the Palm OS would be with the Storm 2 hardware. RIM, Palm - start talking!
Another apple fanboy...I have had both and can type better on my storm than iphone period. The storm 2's screen will make it no contest
I owned a storm and I loved it. Best phone ever for me. Then I used an Iphone and I literally couldn't use the storm any more. I was so in love with the ease of use for texting, emails and the speed at which i could type. I was fast on the storm but much faster on the Iphone. I ended up selling my storm because it was ruined for me after using the Iphone. I really hope the Storm 2 answers expectations.
Come on Verizon release the release date already, my new every 2 was up last month, and I am holding out for this phone. Should be a nice upgrade from the Samsung SCH-i760
The Verizon Storm 1 had both CDMA and GSM. Does the Storm 2 have both?
That is really cool. I always liked RIM's idea of a clicking screen, but now they've nailed it from the looks of this. Can't wait to actually handle one. Is AT&T really going to get one of these too? I mean, I would expect Vodafone and Verizon to launch them, but not AT&T.
I wonder if WiFi will be missing by the time (if) it makes it to the Canadian Telus network.
"You're pressing on the screen, which is a huge advantage." Yes, it's mindblowing.
I love how he just keeps pressing on the sponge.
HUGE difference!!...Night and Day!
if it makes soo much easier then why doesnt he actually show texting on the storm two. all he does is press the background down a bunch of times...if its better then the iphone i would have liked to actually see it being done
Please let him be right about AT&T getting it. I have liked the Storm but not enough to switch from the best carrier.
AT&T is the "best carrier?"
You must be on REAL crack. lol.
So, really this is a capacitive version of resistive technology?
That's exactly what it is!
Well, that's good. So does this mean you could use a stylus on a capacitive screen? Or is it still activated by "heat"
Having struggled with a Storm for 4 months and then moving to a 3GS I also feel that he should have compared the Storm 2 to the 1 without the digs at the GS. I find the GS to be a better all around phone than the Storm (yes, even on AT&T). I can type faster and with better accuracy on the GS without the fatigue that I experience with the Storm and with an 8830, I came to hate the trackball on the 8830. I really don't see the advantages of the new screen.
Storm users seem to suffer from IPhone envy. Just get an IPhone.
While I wouldn't mind having the newest Iphone over my storm i will refuse to switch to At&T cause of their inferior 3g coverage. Living in a rural area and traveling a lot i find that verizons network consistently provides me with excellent 3g coverage which allows me to utilize my storm to full effect.
A good question to ask is how this new "active" screen will affect battery life
