HTC Pure and Tilt 2 bring Windows Mobile 6.5 to AT&T
Long-rumored versions of HTC's ubiquitous Touch Diamond2 and Touch Pro2 have finally been made official for AT&T -- but perhaps more notably, they mark AT&T's very first forays into the WinMo 6.5 arena as Microsoft officially unleashes the latest version of its mobile platform on the world this week. The Pure (pictured left) is a particularly heavy rework of the Diamond2's industrial design, shedding the square metal-adorned shell for a glossy black plastic one while carrying over the 3.2-inch WVGA display and 5 megapixel autofocus camera. Meanwhile, the Tilt 2 resurrects the Tilt name -- dormant since AT&T's version of the TyTN II made way for the Fuze last year -- bringing a 3.6-inch WVGA display, full QWERTY keyboard with tilt-up display (hence the name), full duplex speakerphone, and a 3.2 megapixel cam. The Pure will be the first on shelves, available already (ahead of Microsoft's official release on Tuesday, interestingly) for $149.99 on contract after a $50 rebate; the Tilt2 comes "in the following weeks" for $299.99 after $50 rebate.

Pure has a nice price point. Tilt 2 should have a $100 mail in rebate and be $249.99 in my opinion.
YAY...but SMH at the pure's design..
So lame that the 'Tilt 2" doesn't have a 3.5mm headphone jack.
AT&T customers waited so long. Every other carrier released theit Touch Pro 2 long before AT&T. T-Mobile was teh first to release it, several months ago, and they are the only other carrier to NOT have a 3.5mm jack.
But be happy AT&T customers, you have a push to talk button! Seriously, does anyone subscribe to AT&T push to talk? How stupid is that?
Well, I guess we can map that stupid push to talk button to the camera or WiFi or something...
I'm really disappointed in AT&T. Why did we have to wait so long when we didn't even get the latest hardware?
@SaltyDawg: What about the latest software? From what I can tell, the other Touch Pro 2s have a newer version of TF3D. These two variants of the TP2 and TD2 are simply pathetic. AT&T goes from the one and only provider of the Tilt and the Fuze to the last one to release the Tilt2, and it's old and overpriced.
And who decided to redesign the Touch Diamond 2 to make it larger and uglier, but without expanding the screen? Idiots.
@Who?
Sorry sir,
The Fuze is definitely a Touch Pro variant and was so launched on Sprint and Verizon, by the way.
With that said...
I think the Tilt2 is kinda sexy. So is the theme on that build of TF3D. But without a 3.5 jack it will be useless to me for multimedia purposes. Hopefully XDA will have found a way to use that nice duplex speakerphone for something other than conference calling by the time i get one. Well i guess i'm stuck to BT streaming for now...
You're right about the Fuze and Touch Pros. But the point still stands: The Tilt2 is pathetic. As far as I can tell, all the TP2s have TF3D 2.1. This includes the Tilt2, which unlike the other TP2s has WM6.5. That's simply unacceptable.
I want it. No 3.5 jack is no big deal in the long run. I'd like it, it's no deal-breaker.
The 3.5mm jack is overrated. I'm not sure I even have a decent pair of 3.5mm headphones anymore. For those that consider it a deal-breaker, consider a bluetooth stereo headset. THEN, you'll be using the latest hardware.
As for the "older version" of TF3D that's on it, it's a moot point to the vast majority of us that'll flash it 30 minutes after opening the box...
Not bashing your needs or defending AT&T's decisions. Just trying to bring some perspective. I, for one, am excited about it, but keeping my fingers crossed for HTC to start selling unlocked phones in the U.S. next year.
Of course, "vast majority" is like assuming 100% of the people in a room of physicists understand how the Hadron Collider works, then using that as an example in a general room of people.. Yes, most of the 1% of the populace of people who flash their phones will reflash it pretty fast. :) I'm one of those people, but regardless.. But then again, I suppose if we're 1%, 90% probably will never install any applications on it and use it as a portable Outlook and never know all the things it can really do.
Ok, so at&t waiting long enough to introduce the Tilt2, that it saw T-Mobile and Sprint offer this phone at a stupid high price, and then be forced to drop the price (thanks at least in part to Verizon offering it at $199 after rebate). So, they then decide that they will offer it at $299 after rebate? Is there any other conclusion to make other than they don't want anybody to buy this phone? Do they think that if they make it $199, that users will actually consider it over the precious iPhone because some people still want a keyboard and might (just might) opt for this instead? I guess this is the "price" that they expect people to pay to get WinMo 6.5 a whole day earlier than everybody else? I just don't get it.
3.5mm headset jacks are overrated. I have a Curve 8900 with a 3.5mm headset jack. Guess what headset I use? The one that came with the phone.
People who use regular headphones on their phones end up looking like idiots whenever an incoming call comes in and they have to talk directly to the front of the phone (as if it was a walkie-talkie), because there's no mic on the headset. The beauty of using a headset (BT or wired) with a cellphone is not having to take the phone out of the pocket/holster to answer an incoming call.
Personally, I like a 3.5mm jack because that makes me able to jack my "media player" into my car/home stereo. I do use a bluetooth headset when listening on the go...except that it gets a bit bulky when traveling. AT&T loves to sell "accessory packs" so it doesn't surprise me that they would leave the headphone jack out...
Comments are the only places I've read that this doesn't have a 3.5 jack, where are people pulling more specs from?
Looks very nice and sexy! Guys I need your help choosing a HTC phone. Well, in fact the only thing that interested me is to use the PDA features such as email, web, apps etc. I don't care about the phone service cause I'm not going to use it at all.
So, which HTC phone have the best speed, web, mail, apps, battery life, audio/sound, etc? I heard that HTC touch pro 2 is very good and it have great review and rating.
What's your recommendation.
it does have a headphone jack fools
What is the Tilt2 supposed to have that the other's dont? OK, many like the 3.5mm jack, but what's wrong with manilla 2.1 that everyone else is using too? You can add manilla 2.5 from the Leo if you so desire, there's an app for that...:-) LOL
Like Khaytsus says, the very large majority of people that buy these phones really should learn a little customization for these phones. I am not exactly talking about flashing new ROM's. You can add the newest manilla or themes outside of what is pre-loaded via cab without flashing, although getting a fresh new ROM with it already built in is a zillion times better.
As crappy as MS is at least I can put damn near whatever I want on it to make it to my liking, but that also means out of the box the phone is VERY SUSPECT to sucking A$$ because of bloatware added by evil T and basic settings.
i happen to fall into that minority and will flash the best soft radio and ROM w/manilla 2.5 within the 1st 30 minutes of me getting the phone. I know it sux to have to do that I agree, but i dont have 1/4 the issues most people report either. I'm not saying we all become flash geeks and ROM cooks, but it does help the overall experience and it cost you nothing.
Just got a Tilt 2. It does indeed have a headphone jack, but through a dongle that plugs into the USB port. It came with the phone, and the dongle even allows you to charge/sync while using the jack.
The phone also sports an FM Radio if you plug in compatiable headphones via the dongle. (The headphones act as the antenna or something.)
