None too long after its first headshot was posted did Motorola Droid (a.k.a. Sholes) make a covert encore appearance, only showing off this time the startup process. It provides a bit more evidence -- as if we really needed any -- that the phone's bound for Verizon's network, and any Android customizations, at least from the initial glance, are nothing to write home about. It might be running Eclair, but we really can't say from this. One thing's for certain: we'll be looking for a way to turn off that "Droid" voice from speaking every time we power up the phone. Video after the break.
One more thing: Why are most people hoping that it comes with Android 2.0? They only just released 1.6, and it was made available to even the G1. One would only assume that 2.0 would work on recent and upcoming phones too.
kedmond, The 2.0 Eclair release of Android is not expected until 2010 on anything except this phone, so for months it will have the distinction of running the most advanced version of Android available. Some are calling it the best OS on the best phone on the best network.
I have been in love with Android since I got my wonderful Hero (EU version) but I'm not sure that I would like it without its Sense UI. In my humble opinion the naked Android looses all its sex appeal.
Who cares about the robot voice? How often do you power your phone off and on? Anyways, the things that matter are UI, Apps, Price and ability to develop on it.
bah, Verizon will just strip out all the features and put there own custom cheesy menus like they do on every other phone they have. Hey verizon can I please get my phone the way the manufacture intended it to be and not with your dumbdowned menus.
I'm sorry, call me a tech geek but when i first heard that startup voice i messed my pants. its sleek, original, and its amazingly functional....I'll be first in line on release day.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
I hope this phone has android 2.0
I have verizon and can upgrade but I'm waiting for this phone to come out, Hopefully its worth the wait.
Any heard of the rumors that this thing has flash?
Flash 10 is being released for Android and smart phones in general: http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9127986/Adobe_preps_full_Flash_player_for_smartphones
Hopefully that voice at startup is the only design flaw...

This might be the phone that causes me to upgrade early. I've been waiting so long for verizon to get a sweet phone. Please, when is "soon"?
HTC better hurry on the info leaks on the VZ "hero"

I wonder if we could change the voice to say, "How are you gentlemen! All your base are belong to us." Just in case any geeks are feeling nostalgic.
I'm sure it's just a wav or mp3 that gets played... the issue is digging into the OS to change it.

Daft Punk inside.
