Android 2.0 given a once-over, makes 1.6 look a little dated
Many Android-powered devices around the globe haven't even been granted an official Donut update yet, but 2.0 (Eclair, if you like) is already well on its way to completion, and Boy Genius Report has a rather extensive gallery of shots of the latest and greatest code in action. The biggest disappointment might be that the browser seems to be little more than a minor bump from the one that's shipping in 1.6 -- though it's a boatload faster, which is a start -- and the good news is that pretty much everything throughout the platform appears to have been rethought and refined. The skin looks more modern, new UI elements like graphical balloon-shaped submenus are a welcome touch, and features like integrated Facebook synchronization risk putting MOTOBLUR back on its heels. Look, T-Mobile, we appreciate the quick 1.6 rollout, but can we go ahead and get this pushed out stat while you're at it? Check a shot of the new Contacts pop-up menu after the break.

I still think that Android looks dated. Compared to the snazzy HTC Sense UI, this looks like a standard boring desktop with icons on it. Even with the widgets, I'm still looking forward to picking up an HTC Android device! Of course, I have a BB Storm right now and am DYING to get rid of this piece of crap!
They just need to enable multitouch and I'm happy. Works pretty well on the Hero, but it'd be nice if it was supported across the board on Android.
From reading the article on BGR they haven't enabled multitouch on 2.0 *yet* which is a bit disappointing.
I know what you mean.. I am running a very fast Hero ROM on my HTC Magic with multitouch.. the hardware is capable.. it just has to be enabled, but still glad I didnt pay extra money on a Hero just to have an extra 1.8mp camera and a dedicated headset jack (for which I have a 69 cent adapter).
Still don't see why so many people keeping talking about Android like it's so great. I guess it works for you all though.
It's because it IS great. Looking at just the phone's OS and not third-party apps, Android blows everything else out the water. For instance the widget desktop is a million times more usable than the iPhone's retarded "thousands of icons in rows" desktop.
U will Soon Get Consumed. What Platform are u for?...
When I see this version on a phone with a 3.5" screen & a 5 mega-pixel screen I'm going back to Android. I loved my G1 but with its underpowered processor, the freaking small 3.2" screen & a 2 mp camera I just couldn't take it any longer so I sold it & went to an iphone.
"When I see this version on a phone with a 3.5" screen & a 5 mega-pixel screen I'm going back to Android" -- if you mean a 5MP camera, then it looks like Droid is what you're looking for.
does anyone feel like T-mobile gets beasted every time they try to come out with a phone, especially dealing with android, by another phone company. first its the hero, and now its the droid on Verizon! T-mobile just reallly needs to step their game up!
@Greg. I also have a HTC Magic Taiwan bought. I am running a Hero ROM. I find it a little lagging on certain apps compared to the stock HTC Android 1.5 OS I had before. Which ROM do you use ? Does your A2DP work ?
I also have an iPhone and am sick of no multitasking that Android has. I like to know I have tweets now, not everytime I open the app. Skype although a Beta stays open in the background to receive Skype calls. I do not want to receive a push message telling me someone is calling as on iPhone. Apple needs to let apps run in background. And Android is open source. iPhone still wins app battle, but not for long I presume.
this is a cool phone
