Verizon's anti-iPhone gets its first commercial: 'Droid Does'
We knew Verizon Wireless would soon be throwing caution to the wind in an effort to sway uncommitted smartphone buyers towards Big Red, and it looks like the November-bound Motorola Droid will be VZW's anti-iPhone. The spot, which launched tonight and can be view in its entirety after the break, is a 30 second clip that begins by mocking Apple's cutesy music and iconic font typically seen in iPhone plugs. It reels off a number of things that the iPhone can't do, and then abruptly goes into full-on tease mode by flashing glimpses of a robot-controlled future and a tagline that simply states: "Droid Does." No shots of the actual Motorola Droid (or Sholes, as it was known in the past) are shown, but a dedicated teaser portal has already been erected; through that, we're told that the phone will boast Android 2.0 and a 5 megapixel camera. At this point, we'd say the gloves are definitely off -- AT&T, have anything to say for yourself, or is the iPhone doing just fine on its own?

Go ahead, get your Droid.... Then we'll hop on a plane to Europe. My iPhone will work, your Droid will be a paperweight.....
Go to Europe often?
I think Verizon's recently announced phones are world phones. They include Quad-band GSM/EDGE, and Euro 3G.
Yep, been to Germany and Austria in the past month. Not to mention Canada. Funny that I usually wind up on Vodafone's network in Europe, which is something a Verizon customer can't do!
Here is a better video (with Apple music on background):

You are some kind of retard half-wit right? Vodafone and Verizon are in and of itself senor shit for brains. By the way, the majority of the phones Red has are global and I am sure the Droid will not be left in the dark. Go enjoy your pumpkin spice latte somewhere else.
"Not to mention Canada." Yes I would also avoid mentioning it. Since it has CDMA coverage also.
its a GSM/CDMA phone.. YOU FAIL... hope you dont explode plying to Europe.
@ "el Hefe Weizen":
I see your point, but the pumpkin spice latte comment was lame. Go ride your lifted truck in the mud somewhere...
I like Verizon's marketing attacks against AT&T. Too bad T-Mobile's marketing can't come up with ways to display their strength's against AT&T.
Hey Toledo Guy... I do have an Android phone... with T-Mobile.... and I can hop on a plane to Europe(and do quite often) and it works fantastic.
@ "sean":
I think what "Toledo Guy" was saying was not to get your Android phone (i.e. ANY Android phone), but get your Verizon Droid (that happens to be running Android) and try to take it to Europe. I believe he's referencing their operating frequencies, in the event the Droid doesn't launch as one of their World Phones.
Just my interpretation...
That's great for your T-Mobile, but we're talking Verizon here. If T-Mobile were to come out with a deal that allowed me to bring my iPhone over and use their European network at a reasonable price, I'd be listening. Only problem is that a coworker of my wife has T-mobile here, and has no signal whatsoever at her office in suburban Toledo.
I don't understand what you're trying to say, Toledo. Because if you're trying to say Verizon doesn't have carrier support overseas then you're terribly mistaken. Also, how are you connected through Vodaphone if you have at&t when Vodaphone is Verizon's partner? (only assuming because you said you have an iPhone).
Really great ad (and I have an iPhone). Competition is good. Hopefully this will encourage Apple to add some of these features to current and future iPhones.
It's funny how once again T-Mobile got the kiddish phone this time from Motorola as VZW gets the uber sleek professional looking Sholes from Moto
when will T-Mobile either stop reforming their phones into kiddish disasters like they did with the TP2 or just pick up really sleek phones.
The only amazing looking phones they seem to have which match the manufacters models are the Blackberries.
Step it up Magenta.
Maybe a good strategy would be to just copy everything T-Mobile Germany does.
I'm not a big fan of either(not a huge fan on "slider" phones), but the Cliq is, by far, a better looking phone... and the only other difference would be the motoblur that comes with the Cliq(Sholes will be a "Google Experience" phone).
Sean, let's picture a scenario. You're getting ready for a meeting. The people arriving early are talking and everyone's got their phone out. You see 4 people with a Droid and one with a Cliq... which seems more out of place? In my OWN personal opinion, the Cliq just has a bit of a "bubbly" feel to it. Bright colors, big, and round. Do I like the way it looks? Yeah, I think it has some appeal to it. The difference doesn't just end with the form factor, however. Verizon is making this out to be a phone ahead of the game, and with the specs we're seeing... it seems to be just that. That is where the Droid blows the Cliq out of the water, and that is why you see everyone carrying the Droid at our little pretend business meeting.
Now, before anyone gets offended over my scenario, and jumps the gun when I call the Droid "ahead of the game"... let me explain a bit. The specs on the devices we are seeing launched in the same time frame as the Droid are the same as phones released last year. In fact, some of them are even older (I think it's the TP2's processor that is an older model than the original TP, but don't quote me on that). The iPhone is the only other phone on the market right now that can compete with the Droid's rumored specs, which is why Verizon is so adamant about bringing the iPhone up.
Why is THIS phone making such a big splash? It's Verizon's first android phone. It's being released with Android 2.0, and speculation has it that this will likely be the only phone out there for the time being with 2.0 until at least Q2 of 2010. This is Google's chance at making a really great multimedia device comparable to the iPhone's OS. Lastly, this is it for Motorola. If they don't get this right... well, may God have mercy on their souls.
This isn't written to flame anyone. I'm not trying to say the Droid will stomp iPhone or vice versa. (However, I am rooting for the Droid. I can't stand one thing being in the spotlight for too long, and corporate competition is great for consumers =P). I'm only trying to make an informative and educated opinion here since a lot of these posts are severely lacking.
Also, a nice thing is the Droid users won't belittle the Cliq user. They are after all running the same browser, icons, apps, etc... It's all in the ecosystem afterall.
It's the Pre, iPhone, and Storm users that will be pissed cause a. verizon's network is solid across the country, CDMA is faster, READ: more consistent, in the US than HSPDA--until Tmo's gets their crap together and roll out new droids with HSPDA+ at 21mbps... NOW.
This is good, you have #2 (AT&T) seeing some real competition with #1 (Verizon) doing some good ad battling. Just wait until Motorola gets into the mix--should give the Apple ads a run for their money.
DRIOD.COM definitely does it!
Wow... Verizon is ready to go!!!!!
Did anyone else notice at the bottom of the page, it say's droid is a trademark of Lucasfilms LTD. Are the doing a custom OS?
According to wikipedia the term 'droid' is a registered trademark of Lucasfilm Ltd so they mustve got permission to use that name for the mobile and ad campaign, learn something new every day..
A "Defaul88":
Just did a quick trademark search and found this interesting result (although, not that unexpected at this point). What's MOST interesting is the filing date, which is listed as October 9, 2009, just 8 days ago.

Yeah, it's very interesting... of course, they mention that in the commercial... if you look very close at the bottom of the screen when Droid appears, it's registered by Lucasfilms, Ltd. ... So, it's a Star Wars phone!!!
Give credit where credit's due. It's a great commercial. Really good. Still want an iPhone.
Please, do tell the Emperor that we have found the droids we were looking for.
Excellent ad on Verizon's behalf :-) And this is coming from a recent Iphone owner.
If you decipher the countdown clock, something is going to happen on 10/30...
Yup, countdown points to midnight CST on October 30th. Announcement, release? I'm happy with my TP2, but I'll be waiting to see what happens. So Big Red has launched attacks on AT&T and iPhone, what's next?
I'm thinking an announcement on 10/30 for a release date and pricing...Thats me wishing, anyway
your lucky Justin, i've been trying to get a TP2 for about a month now with no luck. the Droid looks awesome though but i didn't want to leave WinMo. either way, 10/30 is probably the launch detail announcement day. one good thing about them being out of TP2's is that i'll more than likely still be in my 30 days when this comes out so maybe i can give it go before times up.
iLove this ad.
LOL bring on the phone wars yo!
All iPhone/Android rivarlies and antagonism aside, is ANYONE at all excited or at the very least intrigued how viral marketing is making its way into realms outside of music and movies??
When a mainstream "by the books" company like Verizon starts delving into these kinds of alternative marketing techniques, really starts to put a semblance of legitimacy behind them.
Anyway, let the android iPhone p*ssing contests renew...
well that commercial is lame and in the end admit it or not no matter those little no important things that iphone can or cant do it still is king, when the next one comes out this coming July see where the lines will be at the apple/ AT&T stores. I'm sure there will be all of 5 people going to get the droid, one its on a crappy OS and two its a motorola, whens the last good phone they made...the razor....oh wait
Here is a better video (with Apple music on background):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nDiLBs8r5I
Yes, because everyone should be a mindless DROID and follow the other goats in the herd in believing that you need all that crap the commercial claims other smart phones don't have..They don't have those features from good reason ..late to the party Motorola and Verizon...
1. Unless you are a Smurf, "Real" keyboards with micro keys are a pain to use
2. Running App's in the background sucks battery life
3. NO, current cellphone network is capable to transferring a 5MP picture in an acceptable amount of time!
4. What are you going to "Customize" on your freekin cellphone anyway..the wallpaper?
5. Lets all "OPEN" our phones to scumbags creating spy-ware loaded, virus laden apps so someone else can see our contacts and pictures on our phones! App stores are a much better idea by filtering and screening apps for spy-ware and viruses than paying $60 a year for an anti-virus and firewall on your phone. Plus who is stopping you from creating a great app and submitting it to one of the app stores.
6. Only Paris Hilton takes pictures in the dark! Who else needs this feature??!!
7. I admit, Interchangeable batteries are not a bad idea though especially on 3G power-sucking networks!
I own an iPhone 3GS and have owned a Storm and G1. There are reasons some things are not done on smart-phones. I have used many many different smart phones for years on all three major carriers and Motorola and Verizon are NOT wise to brag about these GARBAGE features. NO carrier currently has a perfect network, I have used them all recently. AT&T does carry 8 times more data on it's network than Verizon and Sprint, so in turn it's network is unreliable and over taxed. Verizon does have better, slightly speedier standard coverage than AT&T, BUT... it is not anywhere near a true 1.5mps 3G speed anywhere! Sprint, great PTT coverage, not so great 3G coverage or standard coverage either.
>1. Unless you are a Smurf, "Real" keyboards with micro keys are a pain to use
Which explains why BlackBerry is doing so badly, right?
>2. Running App's in the background sucks battery life.
Gee you think? Running things sucks battery life? I'm sure a full on 3D game sucks battery life too, but you don't hear people complaining about that really do you. The point was that the iPhone can not run apps in the background, not that it's not done because it wastes battery. Wasting battery is a moot point anyway because if you don't want battery life wasted then don't run apps in the background.
>3. NO, current cellphone network is capable to transferring a 5MP picture in an acceptable amount of time!
No network?
First of all not everybody uses the network to send information, there are these things, not sure if you heard of them, they are called MicroSD cards. They can hold alot of information, including pictures. Then there is this other thing...I think it's called bluetooth, but I don't have any info on that.
http://web.forret.com/tools/megapixel.asp?width=2580&height=2048
According to the above a JPEG at 90% quality is 733K for a width of 2580 and a height of 2048. That's like 30 seconds at most (in a bad area) which can be pushed to the background anyway.
4. What are you going to "Customize" on your freekin cellphone anyway..the wallpaper?
Well yes the wallpaper, but also stuff like what the icons look like, the font size (for the visually impared), what icons go where and if certain icons even show up. Then add widgits, which Apple fans love to show off on their MacBooks, you can move icons around widgits and other apps. That alot of customization really. Also, I can root my HTC Hero, which you need some hackers to do everytime you update. That in and of itself is customization.
Do you even know how the Android gets applications to most users? You know it's through a store that you can buy apps from, that are under a review process.... Right? Can I adapt a current open source program for android, yes. Can the same be done for an iPhone? Not for free or without major headaches.
Is Apple "giving back to the community"? With the iPhone, arguable no.
>6. Only Paris Hilton takes pictures in the dark! Who else needs this feature??!!
Anybody who is awake and wants to take a picture outside after the sun goes down.
I know, I know, I shouldn't be feeding trolls, but this was full of FUD. I just wanted to let you know why people were ranking it badly.
All of this reminds of the console wars from 20 years ago: Genesis does what Nintendon't.
http://bit.ly/2BMrwE
Maybe it should be Droid Does what iPhon't? ...uh maybe not. But the wireless wars is definitely on. What say you, Steve Jobs?
Nintendo didnt at the time, but who is still in business making consoles? :)
i was about to post that myself, i remember that sega once hated nintendo's ass, now they make games for nintendo, so only time will tell what will happen in 20 years time.
I cannot wait for Oct 30. Big announcement according to the countdown. Awesome
Yea were is sega or genesis for that matter? Same place palm and motorola will be soon
I'm sorry, but this is a terrible way to combat the iPhone. Mocking their likable quirky music like that will definitely strike the wrong cord with some people. It may come off as just being a bully of sorts. The last part of this spot also alienates most consumers. It may appeal to some hardcore tech geeks, but we all know that such a group contains just a small concentration of people. I hope they will not run this ad, it's for their own good.
according to the countdown at the bottom of the page there is about 1122 hours if its reflecting a real time. thats about 48 days....which would be saturday december 5th....hm...
Droid is going to be for everyone Geoff. Sure Red is bullying them around and it's about damn time. They finally have a product that far surpasses the ancient iPhone OS. I think you miss the elemental point; Android is a fully customizable interface to suit anyone, not just your tech geeks. So....been a long time coming....Suck it APPLE!
I love that commercial. Makes me happy to see the iPhone get made fun of. When will people realize it's just a feature phone with crappy apps. I'd hardly call it a smart phone, mabey a media phone would be a better group to put it in. I'm not a fan of android myself, I have nothing against it though. I'm just a diehard Palm user. So I'll stick with my Palm Pre. Palm user since 1999! 10 years of Palm :)
Wonder why is saids November, I have infact confirmed it will be released on Oct 30. It was easy to find out, just change your system clock to Oct 30, and go to droiddoes.com and you will see that the counter no longer countsdown. then change it to Oct 29, and check, its still counting!! I CANT WAIT TILL OCT 30!! I Want My Droid!!!
So does this most likely mean the iPhone will not be coming to Verizon anytime soon?
To me, iPhone vs. Android is going to go down like Betamax vs. VHS did 25 or 30 years ago. iPhone is simply too proprietary for its own good. People like options, and Android provides them in many ways iPhone cannot.
Don't get me wrong...the mere fact that iPhone is closed and Android is open does not, by itself, mean that Android will come out on top. However, when you throw in the fact that Android is being developed by a consortium of dozens of the top hardware, software, and mobile phone companies, and is the brainchild of the most popular web service on the planet, it has quite a bit going for it. Mark my words, Android will eclipse iPhone over the next year or two, and Droid is the start of that.
I know plenty of iPhone lovers are going to read this and will want to comment in some way about how Android has been out since 2008 and hasn't really made waves, but before you do, remember - the phones released with Android, to date, were not designed to be a cut above the rest. Nobody, including Google, T-Mobile, and HTC, thought the G1 was going to take over the world - it was just to get a basic example of the product out in the wild. Now that Android has had a chance to grow (the Eclair was given time to cook, if you will), and is being released on more and more carriers, on more and more phones made by more and more manufacturers, it is only a matter of time.
iPhone was, in many ways, revolutionary, and it has probably done more for the smartphone crowd (even if you'd prefer to not call it a smartphone) than any other product released this millennium, and I am very grateful to Apple for changing the game, because the consumers are the ones who win in the long term. But that simply does not mean that iPhone ever was, currently is, or ever will be the best option out there.
I'll be picking up a Droid the day my AT&T contract (Tilt, not iPhone) runs out in mid-November. Hello QWERTY, multitasking, great camera, open platform, top-notch Google integration, and more!
