Verizon has yet to give a firm date on when we can all get our hands on some Droids, but we know one thing's for certain: it'll be fully revealed for the first time one week from today, October 28. The invitation that's been extended to the media confirms that it'll come from Motorola (of course), it'll be Verizon's "must-have device of the year," and it's got a very close association with giant, scary, glowing eyes. A far cry from Google's friendly green bot, isn't it?
I pay $85 a month for AT&T (voice/data/sms). Is verizon the same or more per month?? i heard something like $99?? does verizon match competitor rate plans?
You're not the bastard child of Steve Jobs are you? you do realise we are talking about a smartphone, not something that looks like it was designed for children and a specsheet that is pretty much late 2006? Or are you apple fanboys really that fickle and dumbfounded
you make a totally legitimate point. unfortunately, this place is highly reactive to any non-negative comments about the iphone. i was just reading the latest subaru Drive magazine, and noticed a feature list for new models which includes "iphone connectivity". i'm not sure if "iphone" has become synonymous with "smartphone" but "iphone compatibility" is everywhere.
i've seen a couple people comment on that, but i would think it's tougher to declare that your product is the "must-have xxx of the year" earlier in the year, not later. the probability of a better device being released the same year is much lower later in the year :)
however, this IS inconsistent with their tagline of "not your next phone, but the one after that", in which case its must-haveness should carry over at least to 2010.
Its a trap! Its Skynet's opening move! Besides that, how can it be the device of the year when it comes out in late 2009? Does this mean their HTC device will suck? Or simply have Android 1.6?
i just started coming to this site a few days ago to follow android phone release coverage. i am currently on sprint, i think at&t sucks, but my impression of these forums is that the verizon fanboyism here is insane. i am totally ignorant to possible at&t fanboyism which may have preceded it, and to which it may be a totally justified response, but that's what i'm getting.
MAYBE is it sells 1+ million the first weekend, and 7 million before the end of the year (impossible). Sorry but the iphone really is the most desired product of 2009, like it or not.
"...Must Have Device of the Year (2009)" IPhone has been dominating overall smartphone sales from Jan to Oct this year. Assuming consumers go crazy with the Droid and surpasses IPhone sales for the holiday, then VZW/Motorola only got the last 2 months for this year. Some android fanatics out there already have pre ordered the htc hero, while others already got suckered to getting the mytouch3g (with 2yr contract). I won't be surprised if apple releases a new version of their iPhone next year.
This is by far VERIZON's "must have device of the year". I would have had an iPhone a long time ago, but am not willing to change networks. As a software developer, I'm more excited about the Droid than if Verizon was getting the iPhone.
Droid is okay. Great to have 2.0, but what about the HTC phone we saw in the photo when this was originally announced? That's the one I want to hear about! When's that baby coming out?!?
Everyone here likes making the iPhone vs Droid comparison here, eh? The Droid will do more simply because it is open. It doesn't mean Apple sucks, it just means that Android allows its users to do what they want on their devices. Apple doesn't. This is fact. Jailbreaking isn't really a counterargument either, as you have to modify the iPhone to an unsupported state to get it to do what you want. You can't called the Jailbroken functionality a feature of the iPhone, as it isn't there by default. Period.
But above even all of this, the iPhone is irrelevant altogether in the face of Android. Google is here to squash Microsoft out of the mobile market, end of story. They don't care about anyone else. By the time Microsoft is marginalized to the tiniest slice of the cake, Google will have pushed its rich web applications to nearly every phone on the planet, running Android or not. When they do, Microsoft will have a choice. Suck it up and adopt these applications, or go proprietary and fail. No doubt they'll choose the latter.
Google doesn't care about the iPhone. OSX will remain on its little iPhone island while Android propagates to nearly every mid-high end phone on the planet, and the iPhone will still be running Google's applications anyway.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.

how many minutes a month are you talking about?
450 minutes per month voice
1500 text messages per month
thanks!
Verizon's comparable plan for smartphones is unlimited data/texts etc. and 450 minutes is $79.99, cheaper than your AT&T plan.
I tried to get Verizon to match but it didn't work. Their loss.
Verizon's is 450 mins, UNL txt, pic, flick, data for $89.99
assuming you are referring to a smart phone that is
An extra 5 bucks ain't bad for a better network
Looks like a Cylon!
I'd just get an iPhone, if you haven't noticed, everything in the goddamned world is customized to be iPhone fricken friendly.

Forgive me... but this is the "must have device for 2009" that they're launching in NOVEMBER? FAIL!
"In 2009" not "for", as in it's being released this year, and in time for the holiday.

"fully revealed for the first time"? BGR has one. Jealous?
Go DIAF, you spammer.

Mark it on your calendar - November 8th! This is set in stone
self-proclaimed desirability is cool

"most desired phone of 2009?" ya ok!!

I guess with all this hype, the STORM will soon be known as the rain shower

For some reason, the bottom of that pict makes me think, "Hello, Dave..."

How do you get an invitation?
