Nokia N900 not coming until some time in November
We've just heard some pretty sour news. Peter Schneider, head of Maemo marketing, has waxed official about the N900's release and quite casually noted that it'll "start shipping during November 2009," which as you very well know is a whole month later than originally expected. An interesting tidbit to his post is that he notes Nokia had lent out 300 pre-production units to the community, and he stresses the importance Nokia places on the feedback received. Connecting the dots might suggest that feedback wasn't quite as hot as Espoo had hoped, and a few last-minute refinements are now being applied. Either way, you're gonna have to refill your patience for potentially another month of waiting.

It's a totally hyped up device. If it does ship in November, it'll probably still be a betaware in my view. So thanks but no thanks. I'll wait for the N920 perhaps, and at the mean time I'm eagerly waiting for the HTC HD2.
I think that Nokia learned not to rush products out too quickly (N97). Sadly, they did not learn what this does to their hardcore supporters who have been waiting for a device since August. It demoralizes them and weakens the Nokia Brand. I was in the flagship store in Chicago and was THE ONLY PERSON in the store. When I left I walked down Michigan Avenue past the Apple store and it was filled with customers. FILLED. If Nokia wants that kind of brand buzz then they will need to do some things differently.
I agree with you in that it's a bit of a let down to its loyals, but apple (I like apples) sells desktops, notebooks, phones, mp3 players, monitors, etc. Until their netbook hits, Nokia sells phones and accessories. It's not really a fair comparison, because people are in the Apple store for all sorts of reasons, they're not all there for iphones.
there's a problem homie, US is Apple's hometown, while Finland is Nokia's hometown.
I appreciate this delay. They are ironing out any glitches in the firmware NOW instead of making the end user suffer. Well done Nokia is all I can say.
There's no reason that vague and shifting release dates are necessary to work out bugs. You set a reasonable deadline to begin with and then you have beta releases of firmware, followed by release candidates. The deadline helps to push things along and get the bugs worked through. Nokia way of doing it is unnecessary.
They're being very transparent, which is nice that we get to see progress, but it also is showing the pains and delays that hit ANY launch.... If apple was this transparent, you'd see all the behind the scenes delays that happen...
Every Nokia device that I've ever waited for has had endless delays. It seems like Nokia is always super vague about release dates and then misses the date several times, which you never knew when it was exactly anyway. Is this really necessary?
What I think happened, is, no one with the test units are reporting anything, because they are to busy playing and fucking around with the devices - and not living up to, or adhering to their contract for reporting bugs, user experience, etc.
i canceled mine
@ soviet: Why did you cancel yours?
I will not rush to buy this thing, it could be interesting, but first I want to hear and read comments from early adopters and Nokia fans before committing, and in the meantime I have preordered an HD2 which should arrive in 9 days to my door.
I have a N97 (beside a HTC Hero and a touchHD which in 9 days will be substituted by the above mentioned HD2) and I must say that even though Nokia rushed it to market still filled with bugs, now after dozens of OTA fixes and updates and 3 new ROMs in 4 months, they managed to fix it up in a way that now it lives up to early expectations, and the new 2.0 ROM due out in a few days promises lots of added goodies.
However it seems that this N900 will not be a real phone but more a net tablet lacking many smartphone features, such as MMs, tethering, BT dialing, etc; because Nokia is committed to keep the N97 as their flagship phone and they will keep updating it.
They even suggested users to send the phone back for repairs because Nokia will substitute free of charge things like the camera's lens cover (that may scratch the lens), do something that will improve GPS lock ins, and change some white battery covers that have some troubles (I can't remember what).
Just last evening I have been invited (for the second time in 3 months) like all all N97 users in Denmark, to a so called N97 Academy, where Nokia reps updated software for N97 owners, explained tricks, answered to questions from users, fed us pretty decent food and drinks, and even gave to all partecipants 1 year free subscription to OVI maps/sat nav (worth about 150$) some cool nokia alu memory sticks, and other nokia accessories.
I have had many phones from many producers but I have never heard of any company going to such lenghts to keep their customers happy.
Have you?
One "refinement" Nokia needs to make to the N900 is 850/1900 3G!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Duh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very, very, very frustrating the absense of 850/1900 3G Nokia!!!!!!
This was all but confirmed nearly 3 weeks ago - Nokia N900 delayed - http://bangbangtech.com/archives/111189/nokia-n900-release-date-delayed .... c'mon Engadget stay on top of it!
It's totally unacceptable !!!
I have never seen a device which was stable at its release date thus why to keep people waiting?
It's a very bad habit at Nokia to keep its customers waiting !
Nokia has no respect for its customers !!!
Not at all !!!!
There are so many Products out there that live from SW Updates why does Nokia think their SW will make such a big Progress in such a short time.
There can only be a major Problem with the System Update process itself, because the harm which is caused by this stupid waiting Strategy for even better SW and there will always be a better SW is much more expensive for Nokia in the long run!
Furthermore it is impossible for Nokia to Update all there already produced units, so the customer has always to update his system with or without this waiting strategy.
Well, in the meantime... Feast your eyes on my N900 review unit!

Nokiaecperts.com put me on to newegg having the pre-order up and dated for 19 Nov 09 @ $559 w/ free shipping!
