Motorola Droid gets fully previewed, 'must-have' claims may not be far off
Boy Genius Report has thrown up a full preview of the Motorola Droid -- or some prototype of it, anyhow -- and any way you slice it, it looks like Android fans, Verizon fans, phone fans, and red-blooded Americans alike should all be feeling pretty good that this thing is gonna kick some ass. As if feeling and looking like a rock-solid, metallic beast wasn't enough, Big Red's first Android outing is said to have killer battery life -- surprising, considering how mediocre the CLIQ's is -- and the seemingly flat keyboard apparently performs admirably, all things considered. Android 2.0 clips along at a nice pace thanks to an OMAP3 core, and obviously, there's not much to complain about visually when you're staring at a 3.7-inch capacitive display sporting roughly WVGA resolution. The icing on the cake, though, might be a magnetic sensor that detects an accessory dock that'll be sold at launch, turning the Droid into a desktop clock and weather station -- perfect for those rare moments when you're not out and about scaring little kids with the phone's robotic red eye. Needless to say, we're looking forward to the 28th.

First!!! An I want one.
I want one!!!! This is going to make me switch from Sprint
Will be switching from T-mobile first thing when this thing releases. I hope T-mobile asks me why I'm terminating my service with them...and I'mma respond that I'm giving in to the Droid overlord!
I'm looking forward to the 28th too... it's when the Storm 2 comes out! Just playing. BBs are boring.
is the CPU the same as whats in the 3GS and Pre?
From what I've read elsewhere on Engadget, yes. It is the same CPU architecture. It differs slightly from the iPhone 3Gs because it is the TI version and not Samsung like the 3Gs and the factory clock speed is a bit lower, but it is a ARM Cortex.
Why would you switch from Sprint to get this when the Moment is coming out with a 800mhz processor?
Not very fond of Samsung and the look of the phone doesn't do it for me... The look and the 2.0 right away make me want this phone. I hope us Sprint Hero users will at least get 1.6 to take some of the hurt away when this is released. Screw 1.6 I want 2.0 hahaha
From what I've read, the 800mhz processor in the Moment is older tech, while the Droid's rocking the same proc as the Pre and 3GS. Newer tech is faster at lower clock.
moment has received mediocre reviews so far. although first impressions of the moment from ctia all were extremely positive, so i don't know what the deal is with the mediocre reviews. in terms of quantifiable specs, at least, the droid appears to a big step up from the moment (except for the amoled screen). for me, the superior battery life, wvga, android 2.0, 16gb sd card, and dual led flash will seal it for me as long as the price point is no more than $199.
Clock speed is a bit misleading in this case because the Droid contains a separate GPU built into its chip that handles the processing on most of the heavy graphical tasks like browsing and such.
I will definitely be keeping my eyes on this. I want an Android phone but I'm debating on which carrier to go to for it. Right now, I'm on Metro PieceofSh**, excuse, PCS, and I'm ready about 2 years over due for an upgrade!
Freudian slip?
This phone use smart bust technology
Usually phone work in 550 MHz but when you use multimedia and games phone can over clocked up to 750 MHz
Why Verizon, why oh why must you continue to put the D-pad on the wrong side of the keyboard? You have angered the NES gods once again! Everyone knows the D-pad goes on the LEFT side... :-(
But I kid... I still am dying to get my hands on one, and if it's as good as I hope, then I'm buying. That said, 2.0 should be out for just about EVERY android device by the end of the year, right? I mean, if you get a CLIQ, you're not sunk, are you?
Totally agree about the Dpad thing, which totally turned me off of this phone. I just renewed with Tmob, and got a Cliq. As I understand it the Cliq is being released with 1.5 where as 1.6 is already available to all other Android phones! Also I've read in various places that upgrades to android on the Cliq could/would be held up by Moto, since the Cliq is running their proprietary Android skin, which as I understand it needs to be updated for compatibility with newer versions of Android... :(
The D-Pad position is genius!! Considering there is no D-Pad on the face of the phone, you can merely slide the keyboard open and voila!! There is your d-pad, on the bottom of the phone underneath your thumb instead of on the top, albeit on the left side of the screen instead of in the natural position. Helpful for those intricate navigation needs where your finger simply won’t do yet keeps the face of the phone neat and clean.

as long as the screen doesn't rotate when the keyboard slides out. not sure if android does this but all the WinMo phones i've used do. i guess you could just have the accelerometer override the keyboard slide out thing so the phone knows what way it's facing. i'm still not a fan of the D-Pad being on the left though as a gamer.

Palm had better get its butt in gear or the Pre will quickly fade from wannabee to neverwas status! I was planning to get a Pre when they became available on Verizon, but out of nowhere, up jumped the Droid and now the Pre has been eliminated from consideration. Sorry Palm! I loved ya, but how can you call the Pre a smartphone when it doesn't have Voice-Dialing or Video Capture??
The D-Pad position is just WRONG. Not only is it on the wrong side for gamers/emulators, but it probably makes the keyboard a pain to use. The 'chin' is also on the right, you have a long way to reach to use the keyboard on the right hand side. If the D-Pad was on the left, then the keyboard would be nicely in the centre.
Aside from all the features this phone has, I'm not impressed with the design of this phone. The keypad is an afterthought. They are all flat and flush with the surface with no indication or feel of a key. Also, why is the touchscreen panel short of the entire body at the bottom of the phone? Is it just to show the Verizon brand?
Hi,
Thank you so much for providing this useful information. I hope this will help many readers.
In wireless and micro earpieces .really it is amaging mobile and its futures and stylish is so good The Tour features the same screen as the Curve 8900. It measures 2.4-inches diagonally and shows 65,536 colors at a 480×360-pixel resolution. Imagery and text look crisp and lively, and and colors explode off the display.
