We've been able to confirm with a trusted source that LG's Chocolate Touch for Verizon -- which will end up being about as far from the sexy
BL40 as possible, unfortunately -- is slated for a November 5 launch. With the
DROID and
Droid Eris both launching in the same window, it's going to be tough for this puppy to get a word in edgewise, even though it's the latest model in a storied brand and really doesn't compete on any level with Verizon's Android devices. Then again, considering how far they've strayed from the BL40 with this one, we can't say we're feeling a ton of sympathy.
[Thanks, HTC Kid]
The type of people that are going to buy the Chocolate Touch are not people that would buy an Android phone anyway. They are people that will for the most part be interested in playing music and texting on their phone, and couldn't care less about the power of the phone. Conversely, those that want power aren't looking to the Chocolate line anyway. So, unlike the Eris, which might siphon off people from the Moto Droid, because they might decide @ $99, the Eris is "enough power" (I don't agree... I'm just saying some might say that), the Chocolate won't affect Droid sales (or the other way around).
What? You say the Eris might draw those sales away? Doubt it... again, if you are looking for texting and music, you are probably looking to steer clear of data plan, which you can't with the Droids. Maybe... just maybe, with the lower price point, Eris will pick up a few fence sitters that wouldn't have otherwise gone with a Smart Phone, but don't think that amount will be significant enough to cannibalize those that want phones like the Chocolate Touch or even the already out EnV Touch.
Agreed, this phone is in no way meant to compete with the Android devices. While the Droid's may steal the spotlight, they should not be related to this phone in terms of attracting customers. Different customer types. I personally have two friends that can't wait to get their mitts on this phone. And they much prefer this form factor over the BL40. What is so great about the BL40's form? The wide screen? Good mostly for web browsing, which they don't use their phones for, nor do they even want to pay the for the feature phone data plan. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that jazz.
It can't compete due to the simple fact it's not a smart phone! It's NOT meant to compete in ANY way. I'm probably going to get one because i'm not paying $30 extra per month for internet i'm not really going to use
Does anyone know if this phone is going to require a data plan? Also, I prefer this to the BL40, I need a phone that will fit in my pocket and be easy to use, the longness of the other phone does not meet the fit in pocket standard whereas this on will.
I bought one yesterday - no data plan was required.
does anyone have this phone yet? I am going today to get a new phone. I just need to know what texting is like. I am looking at this phone because it is the closest thing to being a smartphone without having to change my plan.. Is there a full keyboard that appears for a text message or is it t9 texting just like on a regular phone with no keyboard?
Does the Chocolate Touch require a data plan? I'm getting conflicting info. The Verizon Store has said that it requires a minimum $10 data plan that gives your 25mb of data. What the heck does that allow in layman terms?!?!
Another Verizon licensed retailer that i spoke with claims there is no data plan required, and that maybe the VZ store rep is trying to claim extra commission this way. Does anyone know the real scoop??
Thanks!
CT -
The chocolate touch DOES NOT require a data plan.
As of now, the only NON-SMARTPHONE that does require a data plan is the Samsung Rogue - it's $19.99 for 75MB or $9.99 for 25MB (minimum). To answer your question in layman - All this means is the amount of megabytes that an internet site is sending to your phone. And yes, there is no way to figure out which sites are putting out how much and to keep track of not wanting to go over your amount of megabytes monthly (unless you're very tech saavy). That's why if you have internet at home and a laptop wherever you go for wi-fi, it is unnecessary to get a smartphone or to buy a data package on a non-smartphone.
All you have to do to figure out which phone requires data packages is to go on verizon's website and pretend to purchase a phone...go through all the steps up until checkout where you enter your credit card number. While going through all the steps to fake like you're buying a phone, some boxes will be a square which are options to the buyer and some are circles where you HAVE TO BUY.
Lastly, there are rumors that there might EVENTUALLY be a data plan that HAS to be purchased on the Chocolate Touch, but as of now, you do not have to purchase one.
