HTC Hero / Eris mega faceoff on video
Now that we've got the DROID Eris in the mix, we're up to our ears in HTC Hero-derivative devices. We decided to sit the whole crew (GSM, Sprint and Verizon editions) down for a little modeling session, and we're finding ourselves reticent to pick a favorite. There are really plusses and minuses to each of them, but any way you lean it's a pretty good handset with some perhaps overly bulky software, a wonderful pricepoint (on Verizon, anyway) and probably a limited time in the sun with upcoming Android 2.0 devices, faster processors and wild new screens rolling on in. Check the video out after the break and you can make up your own mind.

key differences in battery size:
HTC Hero:
1350 mAh
Sprint Hero:
1500mAh
Verizon Eris:
1300mAh
why dont mine have google onthe back like the one in the video?
The Hero pictured here is obviously an original without the 1.6 firmware installed as the clock is still cycling the numbers every time you switch scenes.
Paul you should install the MoDaCo Rom on the Hero as it makes it fly in comparison with the original stock firmware.

If your going to compare the HERO phones then review the HERO phones not the iphone or droid.
Why does Verizon like to tamper with all its phones form factors to have the volume rocker on the right side. Most people hold there phone with there left hand and its a there thumb is the main finger they use to get things done.
most people hold their phone with their dominant hand.
you must have a lot of left handed friends.
@rljetsetradio I must not have much in common with most people. Right dominant, left phone. Maybe I just adapted to make use of the common left-side volume rocker.
My Magic still looks better =)
Anyone else notice the Eris is NOT listed as "Mobile Broadband Capable" on Verizon's site?
Just means they won't do tethering plans like on the Droid
It also doesn't mean you can't get tethering to work when someone figures out how to root it
I got the Sprint Hero, and I absolutely love it. But, it gets annoying when my cousin (who owns an iPhone) talks about how awesome it is and how I should have gotten an iPhone. This is why I hate iPhones.
Thats not a reason to hate the iPhone thats a reason to hate your cousin, and probably divorce her.
Um...there was a mention in the video about Engadget "hearing about a flaw in the Droid cameras." Can you expand on this? Is this a hardware flaw, or a software flaw?
test drive google android on your pc before buying an android phone.

Someone please teach that guy how to make a more concise and entertaining video. It just seemed like he was taking forever to not make much of a point at all!
Thanks for the vid tho.
No one even talks about the GSM Htc hero already released in Telus Mobility..
The euro hero does also have the proximity sensor
Doesn't the Sprint Hero have the proximity sensor as well? I thought it dimmed when it got darker.
No offence to the other guys at Engadget, but I like your videos the best.
pretty boring review, just wasted my time, thank you.
What was he talking about with the rumors of a flaw in the droid camera? I realize that the camera isn't great, but is there some manufacturing-flaw rumor circulating about it?
Missing in the video: The Euro-version does not have the "with Google" logo (and therefore does not get OTA-updates from Googles servers).
Interestingly, it's exactly the same with the Droid vs. Milestone: The Milestone (=GSM-version of the Droid) does not come "with Google".
Why does everyone say the Euro version ? I live in the UK which is part of Europe and T-Mobile sell the original Hero shape device in black called the G2 Touch.
@Major
So what do you what them to call it? Euro Hero/G2 touch if on T-mob UK? It's the HERO on Orange UK and the HERO off-line inthe UK so it shall be called the HERO despite what branding you may have on your phone.
So is this Droid camera flaw actually hardware related or can it be fixed with a software update?
Which do you choose? Eris or Hero? I'm going for Eris because I think it has a much simpler design (capacitive buttons, streamlined camera cover, thinner, VERIZON!).
Test.
I love the hero!

does anyone know if the eris can be unlocked? because in a perfect world, the htc eris (or hero 3.0) would be available on sprint for $99. i would have bought it right now if that were the case.
the tiny cosmetic differences just kill me! knowing that there's a better hero out there, and cheaper, make it hard for me to buy the sprint hero. i hate all the buttons around the trackball. the eris just feels nicer in the hand too.
I've got the Euro Hero with the chin, I'ts stunning, has a nice feel to it. I love it :P
When do we get the update ???!!!
