Nokia N900 ad suggests a history of mental illness
The DROID might have started us down the road of dark sci-fi phone ads, but this new Nokia N900 spot takes things to the disturbing next level. We have no idea of what any of this means -- and we're not too sure Nokia really wants to suggest that its new flagship device is the cellphone manifestation of Twitchy McSanity here. You'll see what we mean -- video after the break.
P.S.- Are we the only ones who see this as a nightmarish dystopian remake of Pump Up The Volume? Is that just us? Okay.

This is cute. It draws you in and makes you interested to watch. I enjoy these viral things... Quack quack.
what? that was awesome!
Look at the 2:00 minute mark – Kind of disturbing don’t you think? I wonder why are the majority of smartphone ads today are hyped on ominous-induced effects with transformer-like setups. Is this the new trend? C’mon guys, its not like on 2010 we will be having Droid Robots living on our homes already.

anyway Its good to see Nokia finally release a new breed of their communicator series, I just hope it won't turn out to be another "average" phone..
I think it's a mistake to view this ad as dystopic, as Engadget suggests, or in some way meant to be ominous. I think the idea is that something as advanced Maemo (note the text in the bottom right of the screen says "Project: Maemo//", not N900) could only come from some sort of top secret black box (literally and figuatively) project. Perhaps involving Alien technology, as a comment below suggests. What we're looking at here is that somehow the most advanced, most secret, most gaurded technology of a powerful secretive organizatoin/government is leaking out. So the dark underground room and the people watching behind the glass suggests not dystopic or ominous, but rather secret, gaurded, protected.
I think that's the idea.
Guys, what´s up with you at Engadget and Nokia? Almost all of your "news" or blogs referring to Nokia have a negative twist to them. Did they turn you down for some demo units or what?
No you're not imagining anything. Ever look at the boygeniusreport? It's the same thing there. If it's not an Andriod device or new App for the iPhone apparently its not cool anymore. It's kinda sad really...the HD2 makes the MotoDroid and iPhone look like 2 year old toys, but WinMo is old news, so it gets no love. I love Nokia!! I use an N97 everyday and if the N900 supported 850 MHz US 3G, I'd probably own one too.
Nice video!!!
The consistent Nokia negativity is very evident.
that was one of the promotional video when you had to find the penguin and once you found click on it to win your self a nokia N900.
Have guys in engadget spend more time goofing around and sleeping now a days.
go get yourself some coffee guys.
What this suggests is that it was made by alians not a mental person!!!
Really cool vid. It reminds me of Warlock of the New Mutants. :)
I have to chime in on the negativity on Nokia products on Engadget. Objectivity seems totally lost...
The video looked like it was directed by some kids in art school, and that's why I liked it :-)
Sicko's there in Finland. What a weird ad. I used to be a big Nokia-fan but nowadays I think they're kinda crappy. And making a vid like this doesn't do any good on that...
I think Nokia sexually abused Engadget when they were little kids. At least, that would explain all this animosity they display to Nokia ALL the time...
Hey the penguin is at 2:02 :)
What. The fuck.
Greatest cell phone ad of all-time.
