Qik gets rebuilt for Droid, 480p streaming is upon us
Qik had already been available on Android, but when you bring a monster like the Droid into the mix, it warrants a rewrite -- and that's what the company has put together this week. Qik's new Droid-specific build brings a wealth of new features into play, chiefly Android 2.0 support and an impressive 720 x 480 streaming video resolution, perfect for the Droid's expansive display and 5 megapixel (albeit questionably usable) camera. The version also includes an improved version of what Qik calls the "Speed Sharing Ribbon," an area at the bottom of the display that allows users to drop frequent contacts for sharing recorded videos. There's no word on when the new version hits Droids around the nation, but it's already in an invite-only beta stage, so hopefully it'll be available soon enough. Follow the break for a quick video of that wild 480p support in action -- you ready for the data onslaught, Verizon?

This all goes against Verizon's agreement with their data plan which states.
"Data Plans and Features (such as NationalAccess, BroadbandAccess, GlobalAccess, Push to Talk, and certain VZEmail services) may ONLY be used with wireless devices for the following purposes: (i) Internet browsing; (ii) email; and (iii) intranet access (including access to corporate intranets, email, and individual productivity applications like customer relationship management, sales force, and field service automation). The Data Plans and Features MAY NOT be used for any other purpose. Examples of prohibited uses include, without limitation, the following: (i) continuous uploading, downloading or streaming of audio or video programming or games; (ii) server devices or host computer applications, including, but not limited to, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, automated machine-to-machine connections or peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing; or (iii) as a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections."
It will be interesting to see if Verizion reacts with their terms of service with apps like this, youtube, pandora and the likes.
That is interesting that the wording is there. They clearly already allow youtube (the Droid ships with youtube functionality baked in) and the Pandora app is widely-known to be one of the most popular downloads for it already.
thanks for CENSORING my comment engadget and deleting it ENTIRELY, real classy publication.
I deleted it because you used a derogatory term that we don't allow on the site. If you want to republish the comment and call the publication "uneducated" without using the other word you threw in there, you're welcome to do so.
I wonder how Verizon will deal with the data issues this can cause. Lord knows ATT has felt it since the release of the iPhone.
WHAT derogatory word did I use? You have got to be kidding me?.. Seriously angers me considering I have been a fan of this site until this behavior.. Thanks.
Why is the staff ranked now? I thought you guys made it so that you would always be visible and unrankable after Chris and Jason got downvoted to oblivion after threatening the posters with bans.
That video is gorgeous. I've been wanting to use Qik
I will probably get the Droid or the other android device that comes out before the end of the year with the same specs (not the eris)
I just installed it on my Droid and it crashes while signing in/signing up...just FYI
I wonder how I can get a invite
Was this video shot in Redwood City? I swear I recognize the Fox Theatre and Century Theatres next door.
I've been using this beta version of Qik on my Droid review unit for a couple weeks - here are some samples:
