Droid experiencing external speaker problems, could be a software issue?
It's no reason to panic just yet, but apparently a good amount of people are having trouble with the external speaker on their Motorola Droid cutting out for no reason. It seems to be software-related, and sometimes a reboot fixes it temporarily, but it's a scary problem for people relying on the handset as an alarm clock (or, you know, to receive calls), since you never know when it will strike next. For its part it seems that Motorola is replacing handsets that have the issue, though that's no guarantee of escape from the clutches of silence. Let's hope Motorola updates us with a software patch or some other serious solution soon -- people need to hear that robotic "Droooiiid" alert sound -- and meanwhile let us know if you've been seeing a similar issue.[Thanks, Bryan]

I've been having this issue on my g1 as well...any other android users experiencing it? It must be an android issue. I've had a handset replaced in part because of that particular issue, and the new one has done it as well.
So far this has happened once when I first got the device, but I haven't noticed it since.
Imagine that the god of a phone all these gadget web sites like BGR hail to is having problems.
Tis better to have a well done cupcake than a half-baked eclair. Rofl
Droid does what iDon't. Including hardware issues. I've never had issues with the iPhone so there's something the Droid does.
LOL, another iPhone fanboy upset that people are saying good things about the Droid. It's funny how many people are butt hurt over this phone.
Dude what else can u spect from Motorola...!!! If VZW want to beat the Iphone is has to be with another Iphone and that's not happening anytime soon maybe in 3 year regardless what the fanboys says......!!!
On a semi related note I was told by a Verizon store employee that the Eris will get an update to Android 2.0 on December 11th. It will be an over the air upgrade.
After handling both the Droid and the Eris I prefer the Eris. I do not like the keyboard on the Droid but I like the bigger screen.
This makes the idea of a large Eris shaped phone (with a larger Droid quality screen) a Dragonball processor, Sense UI and Droid 2.0 very appealing.
That will be the phone people will want by the ton.
It is worth waiting for IMHO.
Coming to T-Mobile in 2010. Hahahahaha
LMAO a *dragonball* processor??
Yeah the Droid having issues sounds like saying something good about it.
Was a actually a response to Eric but if anyone thinks I was talking about the article itself then there is little hope for our civilization.
posting from my droid (:D) and I've yet to experience a single issue (btw: LOVE it)
despite the droid's OMAP3 I think the eris is the better phone..
I played with them side by side and I think the eris is more responsive -- i did both browsing comparisons and home screen GUI swipes, etc...the notifications tray on the droid is REALLY slow...there's no excuse for that, the OMAP3 is supposed to be 3-5 times more efficient than Arm11 CPUs like the Quallcomm MSM that the Eris sports..
I believe all these problems are software related (including this speaker thing) and are indicative of a nubile operating system that still needs to mature before I buy any device that runs it.
Agreed. The big year for Droid will be in 2010 and if you can resist this current crop of phones and OS updates you will be well rewarded.
First movers are compelled to buy so god speed to them. :)
I need an HTC device with Droid 2.X or 3 and a larger screen. Then I will dive in.
Lol, well rewarded if you wait out on this crop of phones? You guys act like once you purchase a phone, it's for life! If you plan on staying alive for any amount of time, then guess what!? You're in luck!! Because there is going to be some very cool shit that happens!! Forever!
In fact, I feel sorry for anyone who is waiting on a phone because at some point in time, there will be a better phone that comes out, and guess what? You will miss out on that phone and never be presented with an option to switch. EVER!!!
/sarcasm
Yeah, if the HTC Passion is real and actually does come to Verizon, and runs Android 2.0 with an upgraded SenseUI, that would be the device I've been waiting for to make the switch.
It makes me wonder why they didn't choose THAT device for their huge "droid launch" instead of the motorola, which in my opinion, isn't really that great -- especially the keyboard, god that thing is just a very poor design and basically unusable. The stupid navigation pad on the right takes up so much space that the size of the actual QWERTY keys seemed like pinpoints when I was trying to type on it in the store. I've actually had better luck and accuracy typing on software keyboards than on the droid!
I had it on mine. I just resetted the phone, all good.... Probally software.
I ordered my Motor Droid the day released and haven't experienced any sound issues at all.
I love the fact that everyone is comparing the HTC and the Motorola side by side in the store where there are a million people adjusting every setting on the phones. Just find a friend (or do you lack friends) and play with a properly set up Motorola and HTC side by side. You will notice that the Motorola is faster and more responsive.
BTW in accordance with the topic....no issues here.
Saw it once on Friday after my purchase and did a soft reset. After that, have not seen it since
I had this problem a couple of times the first few days I had the phone, but so far it hasn't happened in a week.
I uninstalled Locale and it went away. I don't know if there's cause and effect there, or just coincidence.
Mine did this once, hasnt done it for about a week. im more concerned with the wifi issues that are detailed on the same forum.. come on engadget??
Wifi is completely unusable.
Adding to it, this issue, my blackberries have been doing similar things for years.. not a big deal.. love my droid..
PS at lease droid doesnt take as long as blackberry to reboot and has ota update.
This happened to my droid for the first time yesterday and coincidentally(?) this article was posted yesterday. Rebooted and it's been fine since. I don't know if it was exactly the same; my speaker still worked but it was just quiet. Then after rebooting it was loud again. I love this phone!
