Just in time for the Pixi's grand debut, webOS devices (that's just Pixi and Pre) now have their first official
Facebook app, joining the ranks of iPhone and
Android... and we're sad to report that it's about as barebones as they can get. It pulls from the raw live stream, seemingly unfiltered -- even if you said "no" to Farmville updates on your main feed, they'll show up here. Clicking a YouTube link brings you to the YouTube app, clicking links go to browser. You can update your status or upload a photo, but that's about it. You can't seem to search Facebook for any info, view events, or anything else, and clicking on someone's name or photo brings up their contact info. And that's about it -- can someone give
Joe Hewitt a ring? Still, it's better than nothing.
WebOS 1.3.1 is required, not that you had any reason to hold off upgrading.
haha winmo has a facebook app too!
yea an app that doesn't auto-refresh. i usually just use m.facebook.com instead of the app on my TP2 just for the simple fact that it's kind of crazy i have to keep hitting refresh to see updated data. it should do it automatically or at least have a timer option.
You should try http://touch.facebook.com - much nicer interface than the standard mobile site...
MAJOR reason to NOT update:
if you use the Pre on another network other than Sprint, 1.3.1 breaks the data settings used to get data provisioning and authentication on the alternate network. This is the case for Verizon. It seems like a problem with the PPP script. So if you use your Pre on VZW, DONT update.
I'd say use touch.Facebook.com (buggy) or lite.facebook.com (less buggy). You could go to the full facebook site as well, but that's a hog on system resources. The Facebook app sucks ... a lot.
I use the regular old facebook site and it works just fine. The bottom bar is a little wonky but it isn't really much of a problem.
x.facebook.com is better than this app, so I'll just keep using that.
What is the point of using an app for a website, especially when the phone already has one of the best mobile browsers ever?
It might have to do with screen size!
Agreed. Do not even know why Facebook bothered creating an app. Navigating Facebook via browser works just fine. If the app isnt better than simply using browser than there was no purpose in creating it. This is simply a story to kick dirt at Palm. WebOS is awesome and I have yet to find an iPhone user that isnt blown away by my Pre. Having a good data network kinda helps out on the browsing experience as well. Apps arent everything and in fact - they are a bit confining compared to a strong web browser. This is a complete non story.
It's so easy to add a filter too. It's like one line of extra code in the main API and one line of code in the JavaScript Facebook Connect API library
who dey indeed!
Just use the actual site on the browser, its exactly like the experience on a desktop, no need for an APP. Only thing lacking is photo uploading from the browser, but that can be done directly from the photo album so no worries there.
