Nokia's Maemo 5-equipped N900 on sale in America for $649
We've already given you a glimpse at the N900, but as of today, you Yanks in the crowd can wrap your own limber paws around Nokia's hero device. Admittedly tailored for enthusiasts and developers to use while the company maneuvers Maemo into its product line, the N900 is now available through Nokia Flagship stores in New York and Chicago, the firm's website and "various independent retailers and e-tailers." A tidy sum of $649 (or $510 if you're smart enough to check Amazon) nabs you an unlocked version with a 5 megapixel camera, 32GB of internal storage and a bombastic, Flash-lovin' web browser. Ain't no shame in lusting after one, but tell us earnestly -- are you forking out nearly seven bills to bring one home?

This is a hot device the price is good, the features are good too, and the fact that I don't have to look like an gay apple boy or a wanna be biz homo with an wackberry makes this the best device for a power user, I'll run out on my lunch break and pick one up. I really shouldn't but i have a few pennies to spend I just pre ordered Sony Xperia X10 from Mobilecityonline its only $999.99 but for those who don't have a good paying job might think that's a lot but that's up to you if you cant buy what you want no matter the cost :)

My brain exploded from reading this "sentence". Jesus Christ. For someone who makes so much money, your grammar and spelling (can't even capitalize "I", really?) is just downright atrocious. How about spending some of that money on high school English classes?
And yes, *are. He's contagious...
Dude, all you're doing is making yourself look like more of a tool. We all know you're full of crap, so just go away...
Is your job hiring?
And you have 2 microwaves running AT THE SAME TIME! Living the good life I see. Also, an educated, well payed person shouldn't have put words together like "wanna be biz homo with an wackberry"...should they? Power user? Please. Toolbag.
What carriers does this work on? It says unlocked, but just to make sure, it will run flawlessly on both T-Mobile 3G and Verizon?
it will work on T-Mobile 3g and AT&T EDGE. The N900 will not work on Verizon as they are a CDMA network. This phone only operates on GSM networks
@Vux,
The N900 is a GSM and HSPA+ phone. Verizon operates a CDMA network, so the N900 won't work on Verizon at all. However, it works on T-Mobile 3G and 2G, and AT&T 2G and EDGE. If you want to make use of the full power of the device, you need to be on T-Mo.
Uhm, Verizon and Sprint are sort of dead man walking. This is not a CDMA handset but a GSM handset.
It will hence work with cell phone companies around the world and proper operators such as T-mobile and AT&T. 3G coverage will however be limited to T-mobile in the US, but available for most GSM operators around the world.
AT&T users can use EDGE which AT&T is so proud to promote these days.
7 Bills? For a resistive touch screen? No way!
Phone looks awesome... specs look awesome.... but. resistive screen sucks.
Add to that it was more than even the Droid.. and the Droid is heavy... I cant see this as garnering much of a following.
Come on Nokia... you can do better! Didnt ya learn anything from the N97, 5800, etc...???
@yaniv.chokron,
I agree that $649 (or $510 at Amazon) is a bit of money, but I can't see the resistive touchscreen being the dealbreaker here. I think you need to try it out yourself first to see what you really think of it.
Also, the total price of, say, the Droid becomes well over $1100 when you count all the money you'll be paying for the phone over the 2-year contract with your operator. Because the N900 is an unlocked device unlike the Droid, or the iPhone, you only need to pay that $510 - $649 for it once, which, admittedly, hurts, and then you're done and you can use the phone on any GSM&HSPA operator you wish to choose at any time.
What Verizon, AT&T and T-Mo really do when they "subsidize" the price of the phone is that they set up an expensive lay away program for the customer, with a lock down to their service. I wish that more people in the States would realize that.
In Asia 85% of all phones are sold unlocked, and in Europe, 75%. But in North America, it's only 5% that are sold unlocked, while the rest are tied to operators. Is it that us North Americans just have less money to spend initially, or are we just too dumb to realize that we are, in fact, paying way more for our phones - it just doesn't look like that at first because the initial price is lower? How come operators can fool us so easily?
Does this get USA 3g?!?
@surge,
Yes, but only on T-Mobile, because the N900 uses the AWS 1700Mhz frequency for 3G that only T-Mo offers in the US. On AT&T you can use the N900 on 2G and EDGE, which, in my opinion, doesn't suffice.
LOL @ 700$ for a phone that only works on T-Mobile and you can't get it with a contract.
Nokia = Fail.
I really like the idea of this phone + 60/mo with 500 min of talk, and unlimited text and data. The main thing to remember is that this is essentially unfettered linux, serious low-level functionality can be added unlike just about anything else out there...multiple web browsers, multiple media players, support for things we haven't thought of yet. Tasty.
Performer Meatloaf has a special place in the hearts of many geeks, as he not only appeared in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the seminal late night B movie, but also hit some chords which cannot help but resonate with degenerate teens, which is to say most of them,k which many of us once were. This resonance hit stride with the album Bat out of Hell and some would say the single Paradise by the Dashboard Light was the very climax.
For those unfamiliar, the tune is about a fellow who pledges his eternal love to a girl he is trying to have his way with parked in a car some dark place. Of course, the fellow later changes his mind and tries to find a way out of his pledge of eternal love and devotion.
Reminds me of Peter Schneider, Head of Marketing for Maemo Devices at Nokia when he said "Symbian and Maemo will continue to co-exist,"
Well, guess that depends on how you define co-exist. For example, if it means that devices in the pipeline will ship with the OS they were originally planned to ship with, then OK, but it looks like the end of the line for Symbian is on the N-series is coming quickly if the Maemo folks can be believed.
Of course I expect that they won't break any promises or forget any vows, but it sure sounds like Nokia may be "praying for the end of time" so they can get on with the future of building world class smartphones which, as we have seen, is going to be a real challenge if they stick with Symbian.
Sadly the company does seem to be sending contradictory and changing messages with regards to its platform strategy. Considering the developer flight from Symbian and the rather steep fall in market share, particularly on the high end, it would seem that Espoo needs to make a choice, clearly communicate that choice and get on with life. Far worse then telling people something they don't want to hear is telling them something that they do want to hear but lying about it.
Espoo, go ahead and sleep on it.

definitely a bone smuggler -
I had a Nokia n800 and currently a n810 but could not convince myself that the n900 is worth it. I use a nokia e71 for the work phone and recently went with the Palm Pre for my personal cell, instead of the n900. I really love the Pre and have just recently purchased the Archos 5 Android for my Internet Tablet needs. I will only go back to Maemo if Nokia releases a tablet only device.
Put this out with AT&T 3G bands and I'll be on this like white on rice.
I just want this, or SOMETHING with Android that works on AT&T 3G that I can get unlocked. I don't know why this is so difficult.
Nokia is botching up the release of this beast completely.
First by releasing a half truth statement that it was "shipping" on the 11th, which in truth meant that they had "ok´d" the first batch to leave the factory, not even that it had left.
And now today with this statement that the N900 is available and has landed in the US. maybe landed as being locked in a shipping container in some harbor, but there is not a store to be found that has the device. Even NokiaUSA.com and their two US stores don´t have a clue when this will be in, and state "maybe at the end of the month". This mornings press release is a complete lie by Nokia marketing.
It annoys me as a customer being pulled around and fed half-truths and outright lies by Nokia.
this device is no where to be seen her in the USA, & btw, they have dumped all their online pre-orders (& incentives) on the premise that their new ordering system is too sensitive to credit card fraud. Nokia is the most awful company concerning customer service. They are the MicroSoft of the phone industry & their attitude regarding profit over good service is no different (or even worse yet). That they have embraced Linux (ha-ha, we'll see just how 'open' its left on their device) is laughable at best. Adriod, even as clamped down as it is, did not see the delays & subterfuge that the device/os has. Another Nokia "jokes on you customers" thing i suppose. Just imagine how successful this company might be in the USA (ie-75% of the highend mrkt) & elsewhere with better focus on customer relations, & not lies.. Wall Street has stated this repeatedly... good luck with your linux experiment nokia..
