Also, this phone is unlocked. Look up the cost of any comparable (if there even is one) phone unlocked and you won't be so quick to say that. The fact that you can go with an inexpensive plan on T-Mo is the only reason that the cost would work out in this case - unfortunately, I cannot go with T-Mo based on reliability of the carrier in my area and the areas that I travel in.

However, my opinion is that even in cases where you may have a cost save for buying an unlocked device, the realized financial advantage is less a factor than the service/enjoyment value of the device over time. The point is that fronting money is never my preference (cash is KING), but I will do it if it is worth the cost. I did it with the iPhone because it was worth the output for that device at that time. Right now (in the US) the N900 is not worth fronting $500, with the requirement for me to be on T-Mo to get 3G data speeds, given the device options available on solid carriers.

Finally, I wanted the N900 from the first time that I read about it, but it still is not worth the initial cash investment plus the hassle of switching to T-Mo for me.

Ineed911

Comments on

Ok. Everyone gets so excited about unlocked and unbranded - but who really cares? If the device is on an inferior network then it may be fine as a niche product to a limited audience, but my days of supporting a great product concept on a flawed provider are over. I learned that lesson from switching from Verizon to AT&T when the original iPhone was released.

Just to restate - again - I don't have a problem with the device, or the price.
