Samsung, get your act together -- I know symbian is a dated platform, but releasing a device just to abandon it is not cool to your end users. Samsung has no more Symbian handsets planned for their 2010-2012 roadmap. This is the last one. Think about it...if they would have used Android or another OS that is in active development (s60v5 is completely done with, on to Symbian^2, ^3, ^4) on the i8910, then they could give us better support. Why? Because, look at how many windows mobile handsets samsung has, and look at how many android handsets they have. There's alot of common code shared among them. That means quicker fixes, less bugs, and better support, and (the most important thing of ALL) a bigger and more knowledgable development team -- since they have to produce code for multiple devices, not just one. Since they only have one Symbian handset, why even bother fixing it?

surgex

Comments on Wronged i8910 HD buyer prepares doctoral-quality thesis on issues

@(Unverified)
Also, take a look at how many updates Android has had over the past 2 years, and compare that to Symbian. Just today Anrdoid 2.1 on the hero was announced. Sure, Symbian Foundation is working hard, but it's progress none of us will even see until Symbian^4 comes out on actual devices in late 2010-2011, and that does not help us i8910 users one bit. Samsung knew S60v5 was a dead platform the second they signed on for this phone. They knew where the foundation was heading and they didn't care. Wonder how many developers samsung even has left that work on Symbian projects...probably not many. Mr. Panashe Ngwerume aka Anphase is doing very brave, useful and good thing and we users from forums(dot)samsungi8910omnia(dot)com are trying to help him in this matter as we felt the same pain more then few moths ago and we're still suffering from Samsungs mistreatment regarding i8910. Just a reminder, Samsung i8510 went down the drain just like i8910 seems to be going right now as far as Samung is demonstrating to us unlucky i8910 owners. Still, we do hope Samsung will change their policy of silence and inactivity and for once do something major for us!
I couldn't agree more that Samsung is a big company but that is also main reason they ought to make a proper moves and listen extensivly to their customers. Some idiot above places the blame for this on the Symbian OS (???) but it's plainly ridiculous to blame the OS for business and engineering level problems. And people are excited about this Bada rubbish? My experience of Samsung phones is that there's nothing to be excited about. Maybe the author should look out for the SE Karura which will also be HD, but hopefully will be built properly. Lastly, the author FALSELY reports at the end of the document that Nokia is 'dropping' Symbian for Maemo. Obviously he got caught up in the hype. I work in this industry, not sure what any of you do so please don't accuse me of not being informed or keeping up-to-date. I know exactly what all the rumours going around are, but unlike some people I know better and don't treat them at face value, because guess what - journalists and bloggers frequently overblow things. By far the powerhouse among the Symbian phones (same HW as the N900) but little to no support from Sammy whatsoever. Added to that it's the only Symbian phone which has a FW update procedure that allows the creation of custom FW's :-), making for a great platform to show what's possible with Symbian (and off course throwing out the annoying Symbian signed nonsense alltogether).

I have to say that since I'm running the latest speed edition rom (thx. Hyp3rX, I guess I'm going to make a donation again anytime soon!) together with software that brings a nice portrait keyboard to the phone, and have Opere Mobile 10 on it I'm actually quite content... no thanks to Samsung support whatsoever :-P

Rik

Comments on Wronged i8910 HD buyer prepares doctoral-quality thesis on issues

@(Unverified)
Ah yes, to add. I read before that it was originally meant that WinMo 6.5 with cap. support would be on this phone, and that Symbian was put on because MS didn't deliver on time. This would explain a lot, especially why it first had the Omnia brandname which was later changed to i8910.

Rik

Comments on Wronged i8910 HD buyer prepares doctoral-quality thesis on issues

People are donating to HyperX for his custom ROMs which are great, yeah but really buggy at times. I'd be willing to pay Samsung for updates if that's what it would take. I mean Apple got iPod Touch users to pay for each update (2.0, 3.0) but that wasn't too bad!
