Verizon to begin requiring data plans on '3G Multimedia' phones?
It looks like new buyers of a slew of Verizon's most popular handsets are going to get saddled with a little extra baggage starting next week: a minimum required data plan of $9.99. The package -- which is said to include 25MB worth of data -- is apparently going to be required for some heavyweights in the carrier's lineup including the enV3 and enV Touch, devices termed "3G Multimedia" phones by the powers that be (as opposed to "advanced," we guess). If you have one of these phones already and you're using it without a data package, don't worry -- you won't initially be required to make any changes, but it seems that certain plan modifications will trigger an automatic add-on. It's a pretty lame move, and considering how closely the FCC is watching Big Red right now, it's not particularly well-timed, either.

It is very stupid move that verizon is going to this. I understand on smartphones but dumbphones that is just nonsense. There are going to lose customers.
Hmmmm, I'm likely to switch back to AT&T now. This is bull.
yeah, im pissed... they have balls to do this... they're forcing everyone who just wants basic talk and text capabilities to have those stupid verizon branded pieces of crap that are ugly, bland and just plain cheap.
I been a customer for years, and frankly because they're switching to 4G and keep spending money on trying to win the arms race with AT&T we have to pay for it? oh hell no. I hope they begin to learn their lesson.. .
I guess this may drive a lot of people to Page Plus or the like... Unlimited talk+txt + 20MB for 39.99 vs what 69.99 for only 450mins + unl txt + 25MB of data + taxes makes it like $80 (double)
So apples to apples 99.99 voice + 20 unl txt + 10 data (25MB) + taxes ~10 $140 ouch! I could get three page plus lines for less!
If this gets down to all other phones, which at this rate it will... verizon is crazy, not everyone or every phone needs data, like one I use as a home phone... using a Dock N Talk.
Wow verizon. Do you not already make enough money with these crazy new ETF's or the super expensive family plans that won't get friends and family unless you get 1400 mins (I thought the whole point of f&f is to be able to cut your minutes). More People are going to move to
AT&T. Why isn't there a carrier who cares what the customer has to say and $10 for 25mb, come on, that's insane.
What worries more regarding this is that the rest of the carriers might follow with this. The only major carrier I can think of that doesn't do what everyone else does is Sprint, and I congratulate them for that, but it sucks that their service isn't enough to shake up the other carriers from monopolizing the market.
I can't really see this working well. AT&T it's one package for data and it's 10 bucks for unlimited.
@Unverified User That if you have the unlimited texting bundled for families
@Unverified User
True but it's very rare that I access a account that doesn't have that. Even if not then it's only 15 bucks for unlimited.
As someone who routinely sells these phones, this won't go over too well. People want the env3 because of texting, not because of data. It's one of the most popular texting phones I sell with Verizon, but I see that being a thing of the past.
Maybe I'm missing something, but where on there does it say that 9.99 add-on is required for those phones?
Another reason for people to consider sprint or go with sprint. Seriously wtf is verizon thinking trying to rip you off. The sad part is that att will follow verizon. Remember how att required internet for smartphones
Let's go twiiter and start talking s@&t on verizon so they can learn there lesson
just another way big red is nickel and diming its customers, not surprising.
Tired of those data bull crap. Need to learn chima mobile, which consumer only paid by the minute their use.
Verizon, in the words of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, "I hate myself for loving you!"
Seriously, crap like this just makes me mad that I WILLINGLY shell out $100 every month to such a company. But it's the biggest necessary evil in my life; I know my phone will work everywhere I go all the time, and that is why you'll never leave my side. Sigh...
haha as if VZW didn't charge enough already now they're charging 40 cents per megabyte? or more if you don't use all 25 MB!!!! What a rip off. Time to leave them if you haven't already.
Like he'll they are. Verizon is already the most expensive carrier. Just because a phone may have a YouTube app or something doesn't mean that everyone is going to use the web features. Becides if that's the case then every cell phone plan might as well include text and web.
Verizon sucks period
I know people with Verizon, and trust me, they'll be switching carriers the next time they need a new phone because they don't want and won't pay for data plans (and still want a semi-decent phone). Verizon better not go forward with this or it'll hurt them. Losing a customer who pays over $200 a month for 4 lines of service is gonna cost them more money than bilking $10 extra a month out of me will.
@computerdude103
What do you mean go forward with it? It started today.
Good thing I cancelled my service and switched to At&t right on time.
people. People! CALM THE F*ck down! Remember there's more then 2 cell companies out there. One of those is sprint. Man to lazy to write how much better it is then both at&t n verizon. If you dnt believe. Just go to sprint.com n on the plans then compare an contrast with at&t plan n verizon. No brainer. Kick ass palm pre. Unlted EVERYTHING! (that means unlted porn 2) lol jk jk
