Samsung Galaxy S coming to AT&T?
We'd already heard from Samsung itself at CTIA that we'd see the high-end Galaxy S complete with blindingly brilliant Super AMOLED display on American soil in 2010 -- and considering that Sammy doesn't play the unlocked, unbranded game in these parts, that means with certainty that it'll be coming to a carrier. Here's where it gets interesting: the Bluetooth SIG has recently certified a "full touch" device (read: no keyboard) from Samsung identified as the SGH-i897 with a 4-inch display and TouchWiz 3.0 -- in other words, a dead ringer for the unbranded Galaxy S that's identified as the i9000. Historically, Samsung models that start with SGH and end with a number 7 land at AT&T (it's a tradition that goes back years) so it stands to reason that this i897 is destined for the orange and blue. Is AT&T actually planning on getting serious about solid Android hardware this year?

I sincerely hope so after the dramatic oh yay oh wait here comes the bitter dissapoIntment that happened with the backflip.
@Eggie197 Luckily, non-US customers don't have to deal with that nonsense.
I second that.
It's all about advertising. This is a great phone (except the os) let's see how atat handles this one.
Yep, I hope AT&T puts out a good Android phone. The Backflip is just strange, and its underpowered. Of course, they will load all their traditional bloatware, and they will probably limit app purchases to Android market.
Meh. Not loving anything Sammy produces. GUI is butt ugly. Hardware always feels like junk. Pass.
Tell me guys, if AT&T is going to cripple the samaung galaxy S. Can you restore it by rooting the phone?
Hello. tell me guys, if AT&T is going to cripple the samsung galaxy S wen It comes out. Can u restore it back by rooting the phone?
@Commanderastig Probably. That said hacking of non-HTC devices might take a little longer as the XDA guys usually just work with those :) It will happen with almost 100% assurance though.
Such a beautiful screen. Such a horrid GUI.
Wow, looks like the 'tip us' feature actually does do something.. I was expecting it to be one of those things people send photos of their junk to, so nobody really checks it anymore because it's just an inbox full of boners.
On another note, it'll be extremely interesting to see how AT&T gimps this phone, considering the UI is already quite poor. Like glazing a turd with another turd. I really hope this thing launches on ATT and gets rooted moments later - the hardware is awesome.
Maybe it'll be followed shortly by the Galaxy S Pro. Give me a superphone with a qwerty!!!!!
@AndyJ Funny, because that got leaked last night. You should check the pics
If the rumors of the iPhone fishing for new carriers hold true why wouldn't AT&T be hunting for other top of the line sets?
AT&T has to pay Apple a buttload of cash for the iPhone so it stands to make sense that the Android sets they use make them more money anyways...per handset anyways.
This would be pretty sweet if ATT had this phone and the Sony X10.
But until I see each phone inside an ATT store, I am not getting my hopes up!!
This with Sense UI = Game Over. Oh wait, AT&T? Maybe not.
So so far we have maybe 4, out of AT&T's 5 Android phones
1) Motorola Backflip
2) Dell Aero
3) HTC Desire
4) Samsung Galaxy S
I wonder what the 5th will be?
@ScienceProUSAcom
I think the Galaxy S will come after Q2. They said they would launch 5 Android phones, 1 Motorola, 1 Dell, and 3 HTC. If the Desire is coming to AT&T, we still don't know what the other 2 HTC devices will be. I wouldn't be surprised if they turn up to be borderline featurephones though.
@jroff its gonna be 2 from Motorola, 2 from HTC and the Dell this year. I'd put the 25 cents in my pocket on it.
Damnit. We have one real good option on Verizon right now, and this badboy goes to Mr. CallDroppy.
Well #3 and #4 have hardly been confirmed... The most damning evidence of the Desire coming to AT&T that I've read about was someone seeing the AT&T logo on-screen on a demo device during a "meeting" but that could be simply because they popped an AT&T SIM in there...
Could've just been a prototype and HTC might still be negotiating with AT&T for all we know. By contrast, we've already seen evidence of the Incredible on Verizon's own internal systems.
I'm pretty sick of waiting for AT&T to get their act together, if they haven't released this or the Desire by May I'm just getting a Nexus One unlocked... And I might or might not renew my contract just to buy an iPhone and resell it for a profit (wonder if it'd be worth waiting for the new one to do that?).
Finally, a Yahoo! phone I can get behind :)
Stupid. Should have released it on a GOOD carrier.
there goes my interest in this phone.
+1 on that Yahoo! phone comment.
Am I the only one that thinks Samsung phones are butt ugly!?
And another phone gets wasted with good potential because of a network.
@sigmund No problem in the NW burbs of Chicago. Never had a dropped call, but then I have a Fuze. Well, had a Fuze, screen capped out. Now have a crappy LG Go Phone temporarily. Come on AT&T get some decent phones!!!! You do have customers that don't want an iPhone!
AT&T needs an Android 2.1 with Qwerty now ! Nexus ONe is already available albeit unsubsidized price.
AT&T needs to get their act going with their Android line up before all their customers go to Verizon and TMobile. With iPhone going non-exclusive soon, they better hang on to their thinning customer base which would become a flood soon.
I see a lot of comment about this phone having an "ugly" UI. What's wrong with ANDROID 2.1 and S life?
ooooh i hope so! this will be my next phone if this news is true.
AT&T has been fine for me thus far down here in PR, altho I've noticed some worrisome signal loss while standing completely still lately (like I'll lose reception entirely for 2-5 min and then regain 4 bars, weirdest thing)... I wouldn't be surprised if their network is finally buckling here like it has in some major US cities, PR is pretty densely populated, 'specially where I live...
Come to think of it, it's ONLY been happening in the general vicinity of my house and nearest mall (like a 5 mile radius maybe?). Hrm... Still, Sprint is the only other comapny w/3G down here and AT&T's prices suit me just fine right now (old family plan w/some perks I've managed to hold unto for dear life).
Is that symptom common in NYC/SF and places where people bitch about AT&T constantly? :s
If At&t get this they'll limit/restrict and ruin the hell out of it..
I'm not saying that to bash At&t. But the Motorola Backflip and Dell Aero are completely restricted Android phones (don't know if they'll try anything on the Nexus One). They don't seem very found of Android-powered phones. They just take the phones and turn them till they aren't even Android phones. Only thing is the Market Place..
Another victim to AT&T's lame as restrictions. They're going to take google search off and replace it with yahoo.. What a joke..
well is it capacitive screen? and is it going to be on the 15 dollar data plan? then it might be somewhat attractive.
as long as I can sync with google contacts and calender I don't care wha the search options are.
Supposedly it's going to Russia for 30,000 Rubles (approx 1,000 USD) in June.
This is already confirmed. At a Dealer Principal meeting 2 weeks ago our Samsung Rep was there and he confirmed at&t is getting this phone.
@kirbo20 That sounds a lot more official than any of the rumors I've seen posted (such as this article)... It gives me a lil' hope towards AT&T if it's true, I just hope they release this thing (or any new Android devices) by May rather than waiting 'till after the release of the new iPhone. I'm sick and tired of waiting, and sick and tired of the lack of official or even semi-official announcements.
Two things one it could be one of the Bada handsets revealed on the recent leaked roadmap or it is infact the GS but, if it lands on ATT are they going too lock it down app wise and destroy the browser/Android experience by yahooing us to death?
So this is the EVO killer.
Well, Samsung makes some slick devices, but honestly, I'm done with buying their abandon-ware products. They have ZERO history of supporting their products with firmware upgrades or even addressing problems with devices.
I learned a hard lesson after the debacle of the Omnia HD i8910. They released it to the market, filled with unfinished software and glitches and forgot about it, until they were almost shamed into throwing out some half hearted effort a few months ago.
To this day, there is no promised HDMI dock, no app store, no nothing. Never buying a Samsung phone again.
I'll give AT&T credit for having a desire to sell Android-based phones. They're new to the game. The Backflip wasn't a total lose: it's great for calls, text, social networking, video streaming, and uploads, but that's it. It's AT&Ts version of the Cliq; great device, slow performance.
This Samsung device at least has the hardware to give Android lovers on AT&T the power they've wanted since day one. Plus, it's one of (only) two devices to support DivxHD.
Why you guys says this phone is coming to AT&T. If it did it will look ugly just like that BackFlip. They will CRIPPLE IT TO SHREDS. Theirs no point of me getting a SAMSUNG phone if AT&T fucked this one up. And the model number I keep reading everywhere else won't be the same as the Galaxy S.
