Brilliant podcast that discussed the week's phone releases in a rational way and covered all the issues good and bad. I feel I have finally heard a balanced set of opinions of the iPhone 4 as it applies to real world use, which correctly praises Apple where due and gives them the gentle nudge they require where they are not quite getting it. The Droid X was really well covered too and I look forward to when tnkgrl has had a chance to have a proper play with it and give first hand opinion. Thanks.
@esp Got a good feeling about the new team, looking forward to a reliable weekly schedule. Myriams technical expertise is a really welcome addition as well. Hope Shaun can still make the odd appearance when he has the time though.
Great show!
@esp
3rded, Myriam and Chris are doing a brilliant job discussing everything without bias and fanboyism.
Thanks for the time/topic list...
Hugely enjoying these podcasts!!! Thank you both so much!
Nice podcast keep them coming.
I'd like to correct a mistake.
By default in iOS4 when you press the home key, the app goes into suspend mode and can be resumed exactly where you left it.
@Girish yes, but for multitasking, a developer you must register a thread to run in the background, ie. apps have to be re-written to support iOS 4's (pseudo) multitasking, contrary to other OS's.
Here is a post that explains this in detail: http://db.tidbits.com/article/11378
@tnkgrl True. But the suspend is resume is there by default. So for 3rd party apps like notes, tasks, games etc. will appear to be multitasking to the user. Only apps which actually need to do something in the background need to be re-written.
@Girish type error, meant to write "suspend and resume" getting used to the evo keyboard
My EVO looks so lame compared to the new Droid X.
The Omap 3630 inside that is going to kick Snapdragon's butt
Hi Chris and Myriam!
There was a happy ending to my story. My dad surprised me and bought me the Hero on Sprint as an early graduation present. This is my first connected phone, and damned if it doesn't feel good. =) I'm eagerly waiting Cyanogen Mod 6 and the chance it brings to try out Froyo.
That being said, I've got concerns about my battery. I got into the habit of listening to podcasts on Google Listen while I fall asleep, and often, I charge the phone in the process.
My brother is telling me that because HTC phones, unlike laptops, don't run directly on AC power, extended use of the phone while it's plugged in is bad for the battery pack. In addition, the Sprint salesperson we bought the phones advised us against keeping the phone on the charger overnight.
Is there any merit to what I'm being told? I really like this phone, it'd be a shame to kill the battery pack so quickly.
@dishbreak
What you need to be concerned about it heat (if the battery gets too hot it's not good for it), repeated small charges (your device should automatically not start charging unless it's below 90% to prevent this) and flattening it. You should generally run your phone to flat once a few weeks after you get it so the battery level display is accurate but doing it regularly is not good for it, try to charge it before it goes below 15% if that's practical.
Your phone should be perfectly happy sitting on the charger overnight while you use listen or similar.
So did Shaun Cooper Die Or Something?
wow Finally some one points out the fact that the iphone is less productive to people that use there phones as TOOLS. i can live with out any iphone game. what i cant live with out is complete gmail integration and the android notification bar.
A rationale and to the point podcast from the mobile editors!
Brilliant job guys.
1000% times better than the other podcast from the trio of classic podcast.
As for phone reviews are concerned, not sure why the mobile editors are not reviewing it. It makes sense right?
So much better than the regular Engadget podcast.
PS, That's what she said.
