Sony Ericsson managed to keep the good times rolling in the second quarter of 2010, posting its
second consecutive razor-thin net profit -- this time of €12 million (about $15.6 million) on sales of €1.757 billion ($2.284 billion). In its earnings report, the company specifically calls out the Xperia
X10 and the
Vivaz -- yes, the Vivaz of all things -- as devices that helped propel it into the black over the past three months, going on to say that the
X10 mini and mini pro have now positioned it for "long term growth." Of course, in an industry where fortunes can turn from week to week and from product to product, these guys certainly can't declare victory just yet.
Why are you guys so surprised that the Vivaz was a big seller for them? Oh that's right, you all live in your Symbian sucks bubble over here, not realizing that people across the world still like the platform. Not everyone owns an iPhone or Android device. Sorry to break that to you.
@LessThanDug The UI is terrible -- absolutely awful. I haven't the foggiest idea how you could argue otherwise.
@Chris Ziegler Listen, I don't doubt that it's a bad UI. I know SE skipped out of a lot of things that Nokia added to S^1 to make it work decently. But people buy phones for more than just the software, contrary to what so many bloggers, and tech experts in the US want you to believe. Nokia and SE have proven that, and they continue to do so. Does software matter? Sure it does, and right now we're seeing it matters more than it ever has. But, strap on a good camera and some sweet autofocusing during video recording, and give it a cute package, and people start to look past a UI that isn't all that great, but still gets the job done. Good hardware can trump not so great software.
The N8 doesn't have the prettiest looking software out there with the most eye candy, and probably isn't going to be as smooth as iOS or Android 2.2. But, because it has a camera that looks darn right disgusting, not to mention a couple of software things the others don't, which I value, I'm very likely going to purchase it (still looking at that E7/N8-01). Take out that camera though, and I wouldn't even think twice about it.
Awesome, good job SE.
Well, that's good they're doing well, even if they've managed to remain completely boring and irrelevant. I want the people that put the W810 in my pocket.
good news...now...PSPhone?
