Samsung Captivate coming to Rogers 'soon'
We'd figured the Captivate name was owned by AT&T, so color us surprised to see that the Galaxy S variant is finding its way to another carrier with the exact same branding and ID: Rogers up in Canada. Pricing and release date aren't being offered up yet, but Rogers says that "more details will be available in the coming weeks," so we're hoping (perhaps foolishly) that we can look forward to an August launch. More on this as soon as we have it.

But doesn't Bell also call their Galaxy S the Vibrant, just like T-Mobile?
I hope that Rogers offers it for $350 off-contract like AT&T was suppose to.
Great pick up for our friends in the "Great White North". I just hope Rogers pushes this phone better then AT&T.
@Versed so like not the pages of bloatware...
@Versed Yeah great pickup. Now it's time for them to give us HTC Magic users our freaking 2.1 + Sense UI update that we've been waiting for for half a friggin year.
Then we need a commitment for 2.2 like T-Mo did for the MT3G.
Good move on Rogers' part. I really like the Captivate form factor more than the Vibrant.
I hope Rogers won't be stupid enough to cripple it just like ATT.
i have one and i love it. there's nothing att did to it you can't get around..
and yea it's better looking than the vibrant which looks like yesterday's iphone ;)
@obobo right on, most consumers won't care or notice that it's crippled, and those who do care will know where to look to un-cripple it.
@obobo Yeah, there is. They crippled the HSUPA radio so you can't get the same upload speeds as the Nexus One or the iPhone 4. Downloads still use HSDPA if available so they're plenty fast, but uploads are pretty slow in comparison. People at XDA have used the (uncrippled) Vibrant radio to be able to use HSUPA on the 1900 frequencies, but since AT&T is mostly 850 it's pretty useless.
There are a lot of us waiting for the Rogers Captivate and it's uncrippled radio so we can finally unlock the full 3g potential of the Captivate.
I'm pissed because I made a long trip across the border on Captivate launch day, paid full retail, subsequently spent *hours* trying to convince AT&T to remove the SIM lock, all so that I could have a unique looking (and kick ass) device, and use it on Rogers' network.
My "exclusivity period" is looking pretty short, especially considering I still don't have this thing unlocked yet. :)
Rumours on the Redboard post have this thing coming out on August 20th. Lack of front facing camera is *kinda* a bummer, but to be honest, I don't know anybody else who has a front facing camera on their phone any way, and I NEVER use Skype, so I can't imagine it being much of a dealbreaker for me. LED flash would be nice, even tho they are useless for the most part, but also not a dealbreaker. I guess it comes down to availability. I was thinking about an iPhone 4, as I've got a 3G right now, but I'm happy to consider this one as well if iPhone 4 availability doesn't improve in the next 2 weeks.
Does the GPS work in Canada?
So since this phone won't be an "exclusive" any more. Does that mean you'll unlock my SIM card AT&T so I can use the phone overseas when traveling without paying your "extortion" international rates?
I've really been looking at this phone, but with all the talk about carriers not updating phones to the newest version of Android (or taking a long time to do so), I'm nervous to make the switch. Any thoughts or advice from someone who has the phone?
Right now I have a jailbroken iPhone 3GS, so I don't want to just make a lateral move ( i.e. If this phone isn't that much better then it's not worth the trouble)
I waited forever for a decent Android phone to come to Rogers before giving up & switching to the iPhone 4. This has to come out NOW??
