Hey, I don't think you answered my question. I'll copy and paste my email. Hopefully you guys answer. "Hi, I am an avid listener of the podcast and am happy with the consistency of the Engadget Mobile Podcast. I have a question about my choosing of a new smartphone. My plans of using this phone is to unlock it and use it on a prepaid plan and use data with wifi at home and a Mifi elsewhere. My choices are to get a Nexus One on kijiji, to buy a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant from bell unsubsidized, or wait for Windows Phone 7 to arrive on the Dell Lightning later this year. First of all, I live in Canada. Specifically in southern Ontario. But what makes my smartphone choosing is this. My plan is to get a Nexus One on kijiji(which is the T-mobile version and is being sold for $475). I figure since it is the "Chosen One" it will increase the resale value. I will wait for Gingerbread and if then I want to jump over to Windows Phone 7, I can sell the Nexus One on eBay for a hefty price and get a Dell Lightning unsubsidized. Do you think the Dell Lighting and Windows Phone 7 is worth the process? Do you think that the Nexus One will have a high resale value because of it's status at Google and it getting updates quicker? Let me know your opinion and any other options. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
P.S. Or should I get the HTC HD2 on kijiji and hack android and eventually Windows Phone 7 onto it?"
The xt701 (aka Motorola Sholes) has been available for a few months now. It was released in China with an 850MHz radio. It has the exact same form factor as the xt720 but does not have the high-res camera and will not record in 720p. It runs stock Eclair (no MotoBLUR) but has a custom built Chinese keyboard which is horrible. 3G works fine on AT&T but it's lacking some of the appealing features of the of the xt720.
@JoseROrtiz thanks :) So does the XT720 have AWS (1700 MHz) 3G?
@myriam the one I played with had a ATT SIM so it was EDGE only, but according to the specs it does support US T-Mo 3G. it lists 1700 and 2100 as the 3G bands.
@myriam is 1700/2100 AWS?

I really appreciate TnkGrl's passion and how emphatically she feels about Blackberry. I'm not quite THAT down on them, but I am really on the same wavelength here. I too was hoping that this would raise the bar and put them in the race, but wow.... I think the only thing we're all not considering is that they have a very Microsoft-ian path to walk as they try not to alienate their huge customer base and at the same time try to raise the bar. This is pretty underwhelming. (Played with it a bit this morning.) I just like the fire. It's missing on other podcasts. If you don't like it, dammit, just say it! Keep it up.
I think Myriam should get the hp CEO job!
Sad that Myriam has turned herself too much to American blindness when talking about Nokia. First thing which comes to my mind is strong Ovi ecosystem (Store for example), they just can't abandon that for Google.
Regards,
N5800XM&HTC Desire user
@Paullll the reality is that Google services' ecosystem is leaps and bounds ahead of Nokia's (OVI).
The only OVI service that competes with Google at the moment is Maps. Most other OVI service are trying to reinvent the wheel, not to mention are not supported by any other platform than Symbian/MeeGo & the Web. The OVI store is just pathetic.
Google's services are fully supported on Android, WebOS & the Web and partially supported (via Exchange and native apps) on iOS, Symbian/MeeGo, Windows Phone/Mobile, and Blackberry.
Most people I know worldwide use Google services, not OVI. So basically, I'm just being realistic here.
I love Nokia's hardware. I think Maemo/MeeGo is brilliant, but I also feel it's too little, too late, and I don't think they'll be able to be competitive. I believe Symbian is a lost cause on touch devices.
Hi Chris and Myriam,
Could you please review Samsung Wave phone (BADA OS)? Its available in Asia and Europe, maybe in Canada too. My dad wants to buy it ( $370 USD without contract in India) coz its powerful and cheap.
I asked him to buy an Android smartphone like Samsung Galaxy S, which costs around $590 USD. So, the difference in cost is $220 USD, for a larger screen, more memory and Android.
Please review the BADA OS so that I can make a decision.
Cheers!
Chris and Myriam,
Could you fill us in on what the latest is with the Moto Droid 2.2 OTA update? There is a whole lot of confusion on the web about it right now, and it doesn't seem that the VZW Techs know much either.
If you could shed some light on it I'm sure many Droid owners will be very happy!
Thanks!
I don't get it. I truly don't. What's so great about Android? I had the G1 and now I'm currently using an iPhone 4. Are you saying everyone should just bow down to Google? If they don't jump on whatever flavor of the moment trend in
Silicon Valley they are irrelevant? After Maps and Gmail what else does Google have that's worthwhile? The more things become the same the less interested I would become.
