I agree completely. Is a standard headphone jack really too much to ask for in a "high end" smartphone?

Re: the "odd" looks- next to the G1 and the myTouch, the Samsung is by far the best looking. I do have to say though, that the build quality and durability of the HTC-made devices I've owned has been outstanding.

I just called T-Mobile because I was getting to the end of bill-close and was about 50 minutes over, so I was going to switch to the next tier up temporarily, but they offered me two deals for being with them for over 5 years, both family plans:

1) 1500 anytime minutes (MyFaves) with 1-year extension for $89.99/mo
2) unlimited anytime minutes with no contract extension for $89.99/mo

Obviously I went with option#2

My 1970's TV had an ambient light sensor that would dim the screen in the dark to avoid eyestrain. I think it was an RCA, but I could be wrong. Just how long are patents in effect for these days?

DRM-free iTunes would be a big hit, with me at least. I can visualize (or is it audioalize) it now: That would be the one more thing; announced to the backing track of Aretha Franklin's version of respect (freedom... freedom... freedom... FREEDOM!!!)

Another wild guess would announcement of a system in which you can carry around all of your personal settings on your iPhone, including things like licensing keys for apps, and preferences which you could use not only for your Mac, but for any compatible device, like an automobile as John Tokash mentioned above. Of course you'd want to carry important current project files, etc. with you as well (which would be version archived automaically via MobileMe. Maybe the announcement of capacity bumps for iPhone 3G to accommodate this system.

Possibly an announcement for iPhone nano, which wouldn't be able to use the prefs/file system, being one of the major differentiation points between it an the 3G model other than size. I don't expect this this year, but can it be far off?

The last discs I burned were data DVD backup of important files on my PowerBook: Sys files, preferences, Address Book, iCal, graphic design files, website working folders, applications, etc., after I was unable to boot from the HD and was horrified to get the message that my HD was failing. Spent the weekend backing up the failing HD onto DVDs, then ripping apart my PBook and replacing the HD. Got everything back, but what a cluster---k, and waste of a weekend.

I would use the 320GB of portable storage, as both a Time Machine backup, and a portable system, so I wouldn't have to carry my PBook on various commutes. Of course My iTunes library would love the extra room to grow.

In that context, you're absolutley right. I was talking about Flash's history as a whole (to present day), but I'll concede the point happily.

So I'm uninformed about Flash? I'll guess that I've been developing content in Flash longer than you've owned a cellphone. I'm fully aware of the capabilities of Flash. And the downsides. Like a few years ago when Microsoft issued a security patch that "broke" nearly all Flash applications running in IE. Before you get your undies in a bunch, notice I said "applications".

"We're talking interactive vector animation." So you read the marketing materials from Flash 4... good for you. If you're unaware of even the basics, like that flash developers often use bitmap images as well as vectors, and encapsulate multiple movieclips into their timelines (making them resource hungry), then it's definitely you who are way too uninformed. Good developers know how to load, unload and optimize to get around this, but there are way too many hacks out there going to market with their crap anyway.

It's got nothing to do with being irritated by seeing banner ads, it has everything to do with the bandwidth and data those ads take up on a mobile platform where it matters.

Most websites have no need for flash, other than the ones that use it for video. The last thing I want to waste time on is watching some sophomoric attempt at making a "cool", "interactive" website load, with buttons that fly in, and an intro screen on my portable device.

If you want a standalone Flash Player so you can play games on your iPhone, I can understand that. If you want a Flash plugin for a mobile browser with limited data rates, and less-than-desktop processing power, forget it because we'll never agree.

Um, not really ironic. Once Adobe got ahold of it (and even during Macromedia's latter days) it became a bloated "development platform". Conceived to be a portable technology, yes. In practice/development, no.
In reality Flash is mostly bloated, resource hungry, snake oil. It's got some redeeming qualities (flash video encoder, for example), but is probably the most misused application I can think of.
I have used an iPhone extensively, and can tell you I don't miss waiting for Flash banner ads to load over the network, when I'm on the go and trying to access useful information in mobile Safari.
I will probably buy a G1 in the next month or so, but it being able to run Flash is not a buying point for me.
