Somehow, the Android dev team managed to get Donut 9MB smaller than Cupcake. (60MB vs 69MB)
What do they mean EOL for the "G1 v1" around 9/8/09?

If they mean they're not selling it anymore, i'm reasonably cool with that, but if they mean that we're not going to get Android 1.6/2.0/2.5/3.0 (and so on)...That's screwed up. Even Apple, the most evil, proprietary, locked-down company out there allows you to upgrade iPhone OS from 1.0 to 3.0 on the iPhone 2G. If T-Mobile doesn't allow you to get past Cupcake cuz they EOL'd it, i expect to see some hardcore, massive backlash.
There will indeed be widgets. Some Android OS devs showed the code to write a "Word of the Day" from Dictionary.com: http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2009/04/introducing-home-screen-widgets-and.html and a regular Android developer guy wrote a widget to display weather: http://www.jsharkey.org/blog/2009/04/24/forecast-widget-for-android-15-with-source/

There's also cool stuff like "Live Folders" you could have a live folder on your desktop that has: "Starred Contacts with Phone Numbers". There's other cool stuff too...

Also, as far as not needing the on-screen keyboard...I don't want to have to always open the keyboard and put wear on the hinge just to type "ok" in a text message or type in a 10-character URL so i really want it.
Actually, you'd be surprised how popular S60 is in the states. You know Verizon's proprietary OS that they put on almost all their non-smartphones? It's S60. Granted, it's locked down to hell, they replace the normal themes with a really really shitty one and it's VERY RAM starved, but it's S60
First, if you follow the Apple Rumour community (i do a wee bit), you'd know that getting the name of a person who made the leak is rare as no one wants to get that person fired (i'm sure T-Mobile execs have seen this bit of news since it's been all over the internets the past day or 2). As for why only Pocket Lint got this "leak"...That's not rare at all...Same thing happens with Apple Rumours (MacRumors gets a leak, every blog links back to MacRumors) and i have cell phone service with T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon, i can call any of those 3 up, ask a question, then call back 5 minutes later, get a different answer to the same question....

I agree that forgetting the release date of the G1 is bad reporting, but (and i'm playing devil's advocate here) the person who got this "leak" probably wanted to break the story as soon as possible and didn't want to take the few minutes to fact check on Wikipedia or something (Again, bad reporting, but understandable).

The G1 will probably be getting full-blown cupcake. For one, if it didn't, the community backlash would be INCREDIBLY harsh because even Apple in all their locked-down-ness let you upgrade the iPhone from v1 to v2 without any jailbreaking or hackyness. For two, Google's releases are base code, it's up to HTC (or some other manufacturer eventually) to "slipstream" in drivers for their specific phones, so even donut or eclair (the major versions after cupcake) could support the G1 quite easily.

All in all, i can't see how cupcake can't be rolled out to the G1 and i can't see how it could possibly be released after May, not only from a user standpoint, but from a business standpoint. If the G1 doesn't soon offer at least some of the features that cupcake promises, a lot of people will give up on it and go back to their iPhones and i'm sure Google and HTC and T-Mobile realize that.
Nice article, however, in every distro that matters, slocate has replaced locate and locate is just an alias to slocate.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I own an iPhone 3G and I'm looking for a decent speaker / alarm clock for it. I am going to listen music in a mid-sized room, so I want nice quality speakers with solid bass. I also want to use it as an alarm clock, so it would be great if there is such a feature. The price can be low-mid to mid-high range. I was looking at the Klipsch iGroove SXT; it's powerful, slick and the reviews are good, but it doesn't have an alarm clock feature. It's no deal breaker if I can set it up from the iPhone, but I'm not sure. Thanks!"
