It's great to see Google back-porting features to older hardware and OS versions. As an iPhone user, I'm excited to see Google building up its product so well; good, well-fought competition is a win-win situation for consumers regardless of platform choice.
Dani: It's not treating smokers as lepers. It's treat smokers as people who have a terrible addiction to something that is destroying their life, much like alcoholics. We lament their addiction, but we also don't make excuses on their behalf for the damage it does.
Sorry, but I have absolutely no sympathy for this. Apple is right to refuse service to them. Cigarette smoke wrecks up electronics. Have you ever seen a device that's in a smoke-infested house? They're always yellowed with a layer of grime on them.

If you choose to smoke, you're screwing yourself. Don't expect other people to pick up the bill for your bad habit.
No reason at all this chip couldn't go into the next-gen portable consoles; I expect it will. But the feature differentiation between portable consoles and smartphones/media players continues to shrink, and for many people, carrying two devices will be redundant, especially if there are great games for the smartphones.
So... it's just like Ping, then?
This is a great development for mobile phones and media players, and a further nail in the quickly-constructing coffin of standalone portable video games.

It's hard to imagine that iPhones and iPod Touches, Android devices, and WebOS devices won't have these built in a year from now; combined with the continued evolutionary progress of mobile 3D chipsets, mobile device gaming should see consistent and steady improvement.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but one (and perhaps only one) advantage that the TomTom (and Navigon and the others) app will continue to have over the forthcoming Google app is that all map data is stored locally on the device. For most people, this is probably not a big deal, but those living or driving in rural areas where cellular data is spotty or non-existent will have to consider it.
Make that "At least 24GB of RAM," not "up to 8GB of RAM." Their site lets you add up to 24GB, which makes me think that its maximum allowable is 32GB, but I can't tell.

8GB of RAM in a machine of those specs would be an obvious bottleneck.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I just switched to Sprint from Verizon about three months ago for the Pre. Then I went for the Hero about a week ago. Now, I miss my hardware keyboard and am thinking about switching to the Moment. I am still able to switch back to Verizon if I want and get the Droid when it arrives. Should I just trade up to the Moment when it comes out, see if I like it, and if not switch to the Droid? Or something else entirely? Help!"
