I am not a fan of Sprint, but the "Whatever you say, sir" comment was silly. It sounds like smart business to me. Why own all those towers when you can lease them instead? I think this is what most of their competitors already do.
Simpletons? Probably not. I, for one, always devour the owners guide the first night and learn every little feature of each phone I own (including a previous Treo 700p). The iPhone interface allows you to perform the same operations much more intuitively. That intuitiveness appeals to everyone, especially to people who want to get every last capability out of their phone.
Wow. Looking that chaotic UI, I am not so unhappy anymore with my (temporarily?) buggy iPhone.
