The problem with wireless broadband spectrum being allocated above the 3GHz band of spectrum is that it is useful only in line of sight applications. This couldn't be allocated for anything useful like LTE because it just doesn't penetrate more dense objects like the 700 MHz band used for OTA broadcast television does. This is why the 700 band was auctioned to telcos to begin with. If more of that band is allocated for use by the telcos, the services they offer will be more stable. I would rather see that spectrum get put to better use. OTA broadcast television is a dying breed. We might as well help it along. That's not to say that we can't keep public television channels broadcasting. Hell, I'd even say that it might be a good idea to start broadcasting some of the existing channels using MediaFLO, ISDB-T, or DVB.
Also sounds similar to something they already had for the end user: Froogle.
I think it would be nice if all POTS lines were converted to SIP VoIP. It would probably cost a lot less for the consumers who still do use landlines, and, once the PSTN is switched over, it would be easy to attach it to the big telcos' existing VoIP networks. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, but that's just my thought.
Dropped DirecTV to save money? Hope you like it when Dish starts raising your prices without telling you. My grandparents have the America's Top 100 package. That's the smallest, most basic package. They have one TV running on Dish, the rest are just on OTA. They've been with Dish for a few years and they started out paying $30 a month. Now they are paying over $70 for the same package, they have not switched packages, and they have never had any premium channels outside of the "free trial" weekends. "Why would you ever pay more for TV?" More like "Why would you ever pay more by switching to Dish?"
This Shuffle is no more! It has ceased to be!
Sprint isn't GSM. That means, no EDGE. It means you are roaming on either Verizon's or Alltel's network. It's CDMA 1xRTT or EV-DO.
@jim: Fair enough. I've had friends on T-Mo who have had different experiences, but ok. Fair enough.
And I'm not going with a network where I have to pay extra just for a phone that will roam on a GSM network. I'd rather have native GSM/3G UMTS/HSPA.
I would care about this, but it doesn't have standard North American 3G, just that random ass T-Mo band. Low-rank me if you want, but I would rather use a carrier that doesn't roam on AT&T's GSM network and charge for it.
Seriously! I need a new laptop and I'm getting sick of waiting for a mainstream mobile processor refresh!
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I'm looking for a solid state drive, around 32 to 64GB, for use in my web server. The drive will contain my web sites and the operating system, either Windows Server 2008 R2 or Ubuntu. Large storage is handled by a separate RAID array, so capacity is not an issue. Rather, I am looking for the fastest, longest-lasting, and most reliable drive under $150 that is suitable to my application. Any thoughts? Thanks!"
