According to Electronista (http://www.electronista.com/articles/09/02/02/nehalem.xeon.late.march/) the quad core Nehalem based Xeons will be out by the end of March so it is entirely feasible that the Mac Pro could have a quad socket layout with quad core chips in each, thus yielding 16 cores total.
