Android a linux based mobile OS was designed to be on hardware platform for WinMo. It is no surprise that HTC being the dominant player on the WinMo handset market, the first on the market with a Android phone. HTC owns about 30% of overall smart handset market, so it is not a "small player". It is surprising though that the Japanese virtually ignored the "smart handset" market for years.

I am not sure how Samsung could be considered "more technologically advanced" when most of the internal components comes from the same supply chain. Perhaps Samsung is just not a big brand in Japan like it is in the US. Or that that NTT Docomo found that HTC was easier to work with. Maybe a cultural rivalry thing? Not sure.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I've found myself using my PC for a lot of conversations lately, and I'm also considering recording a podcast to share with anyone who will listen. There are tons of USB headset / microphones out there, and I'm hoping someone has some solid recommendations based on experience. I'll consider both headsets and standalone mics, by the way, but I'd like to keep the bill under $100 if possible. Help!"
