That said, I can tell you from my experience with the iPhone 3GS and Navigon GPS app that the built-in GPS is plenty good enough. The only time I've lost a lock has been in the tunnel beneath the Seattle Convention Center on I-5. I'm sure the Sygic and TomTom apps would do just as well without the extra (and expensive) TomTom mount.
One nice thing that people aren't mentioning is that if you have more than one iPhone in the household you can share apps between phones using iTunes Home Sharing. My wife and I did this and now we both have the GPS app on our phones from only one purchase. You just have to make sure that both users are logged into the same iTunes account.
