We're only seeing part of a pamphlet here. Let's not be so cynical. Jeez.
@Tor Slettness: Data is mandatory on all of AT&T's PDA-type phones now. Verizon is the same way. I'm not sure about Sprint or T-Mo.
For some people, it's worth a little more money to actually be able to use their phones in places other than just major metro areas.
There are TONS of free apps for the iPhone. Every phone costs money to use and operate; the iPhone is no exception, and it doesn't cost any more than any other PDA-type phone so I'm not sure why you're saying "Everywhere you turn around you are being charged for one thing or another." A WinMo phone's monthly bill would cost the same as an iPhone.
My only question is, why?

My follow-up question is, who decided that people want a translucent screen? I can't see this being a big seller; it's more like a tech demo.
The web browser is the standard MEdia Net browser with a few extra functions like full screen mode. For example, Mobile Facebook (m.facebook.com) works great; however, regular Facebook (www.facebook.com) doesn't work because the browser doesn't support the javascript necessary to make the site run. It's not as good as the iPhone's browser to be sure, but it's good for only $10/mth.
AT&T would detect that you're using an iPhone. After a while, they'd send you a text message to call in and get the proper plan. I don't know how much they enforce it beyond that, though.
I don't even have DirecTV and I downloaded the app just in case I get DirecTV one day but by that time they start charging for the app. :)
I want this. (Please?)

As far as the economy goes, just make me King and everything will work out fine.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I own an iPhone 3G and I'm looking for a decent speaker / alarm clock for it. I am going to listen music in a mid-sized room, so I want nice quality speakers with solid bass. I also want to use it as an alarm clock, so it would be great if there is such a feature. The price can be low-mid to mid-high range. I was looking at the Klipsch iGroove SXT; it's powerful, slick and the reviews are good, but it doesn't have an alarm clock feature. It's no deal breaker if I can set it up from the iPhone, but I'm not sure. Thanks!"
